Space managment with game breeds

Quote:
The OP never mentioned showing sporting anything other than space and housing of birds considered game. This thread has gone off course as they usually do with tales of hatchery birds. There is never a unbiased opinion though those that admit they have a bias give a more honest opinion. How do we know that his intention are not for yard ornaments. Most chicken owners outside of meat and eggs ARE owning the birds for yard ornaments and pets.

This might actually be a good thing to do for all chickens.... make them work a little for that food... exercise those wings more than just to go to roost with. Plus it would help with rodents and keeping the watering container clean from scratching. That would be a good thing for chicken health AND prevent me from having to change the water so often.

Of course you'd have to change this up a little if you have chicks.

Good idea. I think I'll be considering doing this for all my chickens.

Actually, he did mention he was looking to sell them at auctions.

Good luck to you Rittert3 and I'll be in touch in the future to see if you're still interested when I've got some cubalaya stock for sale.

Actually you mentioned showing birds not the original poster, so who went off topic?

Ummm.... Maybe I missed it somewhere, but I don't believe I ever tried selling him/her/it anything. Only offered my experiences with both breeders and hatcheries and encouraged the OP to do their research and talk to whomever they decided to buy from hatchery or breeder. If I am not mistaken, have you not posted birds for sale on here? Were they the disease ridden mongrels you made out all individual breeders stock to be? Just thought I'd offer my opinion and experiences from all my years of raising birds, only trying to help out a newbie and keep them from having to learn by their own experience when they could let me relate mine. Beginning to sound like someone got burned by a chicken peddler to me, forget to do your research?

.... Anyways, I'll leave this thread alone as I believe we have given the OP all the info he/she needs....

....O, and before I forget, if you are interested in eating some $150+ meat birds, pm me your shipping info and I'll send my paypal info back so you can buy all the meat birds you want at that price per bird..... LOLOLOLOL.....

You noticed I put IF and also I pointed out that Ideal makes a point of telling buyers they do NOT sell show birds. So actually I made the case for YOUR business. Let's not turn a thread for advice into a argument over hatcheries. If you wish we can start another thread on sellers of $50plus hatching eggs posting advice for folks to stay away from hatcheries and the ethics of that type of posting. I only made that advice with the intent that IF he was not showing or sporting that hatcheries have a better reputation of disease free. But I believe I also pointed out that many game breeds are NOT available from hatcheries, again helping YOUR business.

Now we can drop this as it is, with some dignity, or dishonor the OP by bickering over something that really was not the intent to begin with.

I will leave this comment from you as my final response to you.

Cuban as far as I know there is no restriction to sell hatchery birds at auction, and some of the hatcheries only sell purebred though they may not be show quality.

You're right. Nothing is at stake except the seller's reputation.

I think honesty is the most important part of a seller's reputation, but then that is just my opinion. If you buy at auction you have the right to examine the birds and ask the seller questions. To a seasoned individual as yourself you should be able to spot hatchery birds. I know many breeders, feed stores, and other business selling hatchery chicks and make no bones about it, they seem to have a hard time keeping them they sell quickly. Local feed stores do have to turn to breeders for certain breeds, but TSC and others will ONLY sell hatchery birds. Their business is doing fine, so I guess their reputation is ok. Except for sales associates usually have little knowledge of poultry, but this happens in a lot of business. One thing I would never tolerate from a seller is a rude obnoxious attitude(not talking about you)

I would like to let this drop, I do not think this is what the OP was looking for. Yes he mentioned selling at auctions, but for the most part I believe this is not a business to him but a hobby like me. I think all business people breeders and hatcheries deserve the respect that they give. I do not work or represent a hatchery, but I do believe in being fair and helpful and I only meant to suggest do to the heartbreaking stories of flocks being culled do to disease. It was not a accusation towards anybody, but both posters told of where the disease came from. I think there is a good likely hood that he may become a customer of breeders on BYC if he is not scared off.

I apologize if I seemed rude that was not my intention or to slight anyone. But anytime advice that outright advises against a respectable business is given the whole of the situation must be looked at by an intelligent buyer. I would expect the breeders to show the same courtesy that the hatcheries have shown them. I expect the same courtesy from any seller of a product that I also extend to them. And I expect the same courtesy as a poster that I try to extend to others.

OP you have my sincere apology that I was part of this thread going awry.
