You're right. Nothing is at stake except the seller's reputation.
I think honesty is the most important part of a seller's reputation, but then that is just my opinion. If you buy at auction you have the right to examine the birds and ask the seller questions. To a seasoned individual as yourself you should be able to spot hatchery birds. I know many breeders, feed stores, and other business selling hatchery chicks and make no bones about it, they seem to have a hard time keeping them they sell quickly. Local feed stores do have to turn to breeders for certain breeds, but
TSC and others will ONLY sell hatchery birds. Their business is doing fine, so I guess their reputation is ok. Except for sales associates usually have little knowledge of poultry, but this happens in a lot of business. One thing I would never tolerate from a seller is a rude obnoxious attitude(not talking about you)
I would like to let this drop, I do not think this is what the OP was looking for. Yes he mentioned selling at auctions, but for the most part I believe this is not a business to him but a hobby like me. I think all business people breeders and hatcheries deserve the respect that they give. I do not work or represent a hatchery, but I do believe in being fair and helpful and I only meant to suggest do to the heartbreaking stories of flocks being culled do to disease. It was not a accusation towards anybody, but both posters told of where the disease came from. I think there is a good likely hood that he may become a customer of breeders on BYC if he is not scared off.
I apologize if I seemed rude that was not my intention or to slight anyone. But anytime advice that outright advises against a respectable business is given the whole of the situation must be looked at by an intelligent buyer. I would expect the breeders to show the same courtesy that the hatcheries have shown them. I expect the same courtesy from any seller of a product that I also extend to them. And I expect the same courtesy as a poster that I try to extend to others.
OP you have my sincere apology that I was part of this thread going awry.
