When the state vet was here for NPIP testing, we chatted about Lucky and Baby while they were tested. In his opinion, Baby will be around in a while, but he reminded me that nerve damange takes a lot longer to heal then muscle damage. The fact that she was able to stand now did really look positive for her, but he told me she probobly woulnd't be walking for another month or two, even with the foot wrap to help her. It can take 6 monthes to a year for full recovery. He thought lucky would live, but may never walk again, as aschew as she is. He also didn't think she'd ever lay eggs again, and baby may not lay this coming year, but probobly would year after, once she's been up and walking for awhile. No walking, no eggs. Still, the outlook (eventually) is good. He was very impressed with the size on the two buff boys and and gray boy. They also loved the sebbies. The Africans, however, bit the crap out of everyone. LOL

Yay for Spirit and Lucky!!!! Sorry Marty for the bad news of the other one. How much snoe have you gotten already Iian? We still only have our 8 inches. My African crosses are really filling out beautifully!! The two that only had the single lobs are starting to develop the other one. I now have three hay pile's for them so the lone one can get of the snow and ice too. I now have 2 pair that have formed, I wonder if the lone one is a gander? If he/she is then she will just be with the ducks. That is the one that is still really skitish too.

I am so glad that spirit is coming along so nicely. Good for him!!!!

Marty, sounds like your NPIP visit went well overall. Funny that the africans had such attitude. I really hope Baby and Lucky recover 100% although it seems like it takes forever sometimes. I'd love to see new pics of your group, too!!

Triplell, glad you are getting things sorted out with your geese. Hope your lone one will eventually link up with one of the pairs. We have been lucky to only get about 5" at the house from this storm, but it dumped over a foot at the resorts and has caused major problems with the stretch of freeway that goes over the summit. It has been clearing up nicely this afternoon, so we are set to take Spirit to the vet in the morning!

Good I'm glad that things wont stop you from taking Spirit in the morning! The geese are doing good outside for now. When it gets extemely cold and fridgid I will be putting them in the barn in thier own sections until spring. They will just have to stay there at least until March or April depending on the weather. I will have no way to let them go outside until then. Sad but true. Come this summer I plan on making better huts for them and the ducks that will be closer to the barn for electricity and me walking to feed ,water. I also will be making more pens around the barns to seperate the pairs more for ther gosslings.

Marty sorry to hear about Lucky, how is your daughter taking the news? and you know what miracles happen everyday so don't give up. If she can swim then hopefully that will help build up muscles for walking. Happy to hear of the news for baby... I betcha my Embden gander would bite too.Although he has really been trying his best not to bite me. lol

We have returned from the vet! Spirit was a champ as usual. We were able to remove the upper rod without any sedation and Spirit already appears more comfortable moving around in his room. However, the vet was clear that he is to be inside 24/7 for the next 7-10 days to make sure he does not overly stress the newly fused bone. We return in 3 weeks to remove the lower rod and then voila, it will be done! The rest will be up to Spirit, time and good fortune. I am also pleased that he showed a slight weight gain after losing so much weight post surgery. Hope to see a bigger gain the next time we go, as the vet said we can pump him up with unlimited grain now.

On the way home, I dropped hubby off at work (petco) and it was interesting to see the reactions I got. The 1st person thought it was SO COOL and excitedly asked to take a picture of my duck. The next person looked shocked that I had "real live turkey" in my arms. Most, however, were smart enough to know it is a goose. But then everyone was afraid to touch him, fearing he will bite them, even though Spirit was being perfectly calm and friendly.

It was an experience.

What great news J.. so happy for you all. how funny that some thought Spirit was a duck and someone else thought he was a turkey.
