Spitzhaubens

I will the second is the one I've thought cockrel from the beginning just because he was late tail feathering and from what I've read that the boys tend to feather later... the first one was late to get her Crest? So maybe that's why it's so small? She was also the tiniest of the 5 too..so maybe shes just a little slow on her crest floofing out?

I have 5 almost 6 week old Spitzhaubens... 3 I am certain are pullets... but these 2 one I'm fairly certain Is a cockerel bc his tail feathers didn't come in until 2 weeks after the others and has more frosted smaller Crest but the other I thought was female but the crest is crazy small and now I'm starting to question is shes a she or not
Welcome to the Spitzhauben thread! I would look for the emergence of wattles on the boys as the first sign. Within the next 1-3 weeks, they will appear more obvious. Keep us posted!

This one right here is my favorite shes my cuddle bug

We have 3 gold chicks that are almost 7 weeks old. We are new to Spitzhauben, and we are clueless when it comes to sexing them. Our guesses are: First one—cockerel. Second—?? Third—pullet.

Any input from those more experienced?

I'm thinking 1is a cockerel. Its wattles are slightly more pronounced and has a nice visible comb so far. Two and three are toss ups. I see very slight pale wattles, but no comb, so you may have two pullets. Nice coloring on them! I like how the boys crest seems to be straight and pointing forward. #2's crest is everywhere like a poof! Not sure about 3's crest. Looks like its going forward.

@Rockporters how do they look now? Have any news and/or photos for us?

My youngsters are now 4 months old. The girls still have a lot of black, but the cockerel, Beldar, has lost his black saddle. I'm thinking the girls probably won't, if anything, the black is increasing. Meanwhile, their mama Moonshine, the Sebright, went broody again. So she spent last night in our basement jail. I tried letting her out w the flock this morning. Beldar saw her and ran to her, grabbed her by the neck and jumped on top of her! I have not seen him trying to mate with anyone before today so I was surprised. Then the top hen, who witnessed this, attacked Moonshine briefly, and soon everyone went on as if they were one big family again. Later, I found Moonshine back in a nest, so I put her back in broody jail. It usually takes 2 nights to break her of it. She'll have to be re-introduced all over again.
