Spring 2017 first timers post!

Hi, we just got our first chicks on the 15th, born on the 13th! 3 Buff Orpingtons and 2 Barred Rock chicks. We named them April, May, June, July, and August! Does anyone know when we will know for sure if we have girls or boys?

Now by 10-12 wks you'll able to pinpoint which one is roo and which ones are pullets.

Normally if you buy pullets chicks

90% of the chance you have pullets, it's my 4th Year w/ chicks, I only got one rooster out of 30+ and 4 generations of chicks.

Veggiegoneggie, I can so understand this. Today is my first day away from them and it is driving me crazy. I swear I sat for hours just watching them for the last four days. They change every day.

Right?!? They're just so fascinating, and they're growing WAAAAAY too fast.

Can't wait to see pictures of your new babies, who have *amazing* names by the way.

The Orpingtons you can usually identify by 6 weeks based on comb size and color. I've heard something about sexing Barred Rocks based on the head spot? Not sure, maybe ask in the "What Breed or Gender is This?" forum.

Strange happenings in the coop! Just got back from the coop to check on my flock. I found my almost 3 week old chickens in the big coop sleeping. Somehow they got out of their area and into the big coop with my 11 week old flock. I truly don't know how they managed it! I'm beyond thankful that my barred rock didn't attack them.
