Spring Granny Square Swap

New Mexico Forest Svc. has a seedling sale every year, if you own at least 1 acre in NM you can purchase trees and they have a special releaf project for areas that have been decimated by man or nature. They always give me a good donation for my soil/water/tree project every year. Here it's against the law to clear more land than you are using, it has to stay fully desert or treed if that is it's natural state. They are enforcing it much more now thank the heavens.

Good for you. The people who owned the lot nextdoor, which we now own, cut all the trees years ago and just left the cuttings and a mess. Why I have no idea. None are Pines but what a waste. I'd like to replant some of it but can't afford it.

I have another neighbor who has cleared his land and mows it all summer. He doesn't use it for anything just cleared it and left it.

That's pretty normal out here. Most plots are 10 acres, give or take, and folks just doze all the sage down and then leave it. Some have horses or cattle but many do nothing with it. I guess they do it to remove habitat for rattlers or to remove the fire danger but the bare land causes terrible problems with sand flying when it gets windy (and it gets very windy up here often). I wish they would just stick to a defensible space around their houses instead of leveling all 10 acres.

I wish NY was like that. Some time ago I noticed some clearing of land nearby and call the town. I was told they weren't supposed to clear it but whether anything was done I don't know.

One thing I will say is I visited Isreal twice and was saddened by the desert like mountains. If we don't take care our mountains can become the same way. I think that trees are a good way to determine the pollution in the air. At least I think I've read that.

Folks are surprised we see little deer here but there is no "corridor"' for them to travel through from one place to another. It's very important for migrating animals to have a "path" from one place to the next.

I think that there was sort of a 'vote' a few pages back where everyone agreed to round it to an even 20.
I had to chuck my first 17 - so I've only got 11 so far - but at 2/night (couple of times a week) I should be caught back up soon.

Writer, I think the idea of a swap designed to produce one of those quilts sound interesting. I'm not sure I'd have the commitment to keep cranking out the same color/pattern over and over again. But that got me to thinking - what about a 'crazy quilt' where everyone returns a square made of 9 little granny squares? Each one done like a single 'sampler' of a quilt square pattern?

So we're at 20 per set. ? I'm almost done with two sets. so i'm good. Just need to get the baggy things. I'll be sticking one of my cards in each bag since I have so many. :)
