Spring Granny Square Swap

Smitty's Farm :

Betty~ All those cookies & bread and just everything sound so yummy! You have some lucky kids and grand kids to receive such yummy good treats. I hope the weather doesn't get to bad for you.

Sunny~ Yes, DD is going to LOVE her new room. We plunged back into it today and got the rest of the flooring in except the very last strip that is a smaller width than the width of the flooring. We cheated and didn't take the baseboards off so now DH is up there putting the quarter round trim down. Still lots to do before she can get back in there, but it's on it's way to FINALLY getting done. YAY!!! Have fun baking tomorrow!

Ha ha. Congrats on getting the floor done so quickly! Well almost done anyway.

Yep will do! I can't do it all at once so I do it in chunks. Tomorrow will be carrot muffins with cream cheese filling for the folks at DH's work followed by red velvet cupcakes (w/custard filling) and cookies Haven't decided on what type of cookies to make yet. Probably pineapple cause I have all the ingredients for those and they are easy.

I've never made fudge. My Mother used to make it all the time but since chocolate is not my favorite thing I've never done it. I should get the recipe from my Mom and make some. DH would be sooo tickled! He loves fudge.

I just finished sweeping and vacuuming all the saw dust. YAY!!! So happy!!! So now I can touch up the paint and paint the inside of the closet.

I finally put up our nature tree in the foyer, but too tired to decorate it. That will have to wait until tomorrow. I need to clean the living room AGAIN before I can get our family hodgepodge (Charlie Brown) tree up. I dread putting the ole thing up. It looks pitiful, but it's so sentimental to DD.

Sunny, Kate & Betty~ All three of you ladies are making me drool. It all sounds so scrumptious!!!!

I've never made fudge before either, but want to. I seem to always run out of time to do all that I want to do. I know it might sound strange, but I make all DH's family loaves of pumpkin bread.

I love meringue cookies, not sure if they are much different than the candies. They taste more like candy that cookies.

My youngest DD always makes the almond peppermint bark. It is very yummy too. I alway like to throw in a new treat each year too. I think I'll make fudge for the something new this time around.

I will make the refrigerator cookie dough too this week since it freezes well. They aren't my favorites but the kids love them and the sugar cookie version and the ginger bread looks so nice when they are decorated. I also love having dough frozen and ready to go for those last minute gifts I always forget about. Actually the ginger bread is very good but it uses shortening and I try to stay away from it.

The cookies I make the most though are my almond lace cookies. I always tell people to save those for last cause after that everything else is "just" a cookie and nothing special anymore. A few batches of those though and my back is done for a week! They are labor intensive.

Wow! Now we're talking baking and candy making. tis the season.....cookies went out today to my military grands. I'll make more just before I go to my daughters on the 21st. We have a red alert out for bad weather. They're saying snow below 2000 feet and I hope they're right. My DH is such a scrooge and says it won't happen but I like the anticipation as much as the snow itself. I did go to town as planned and picked up necessities and a spool of varigated quilting thread. I also bought fleece to make lap robes for my daughter who goes to all my grandsons soccor games and feels the cold. If I finish the binding on the quilt today then I can start on them tomorrow. I'm not a chocolate lover but I do make fudge for those that are. Most of my stuff is made for others anyway. My Amish white bread came out so good. DH smelled fresh bread when he came home last night.

I know this isn't the baking thread but would you two ladies consider sharing the recipes for the 2 breads? After reading your post Betty I am literally smelling fresh bread baking and my mouth is drooling!!! And Kim I can't stop thinking about pumpkin bread! If they are family secrets I understand. It doesn't hurt to ask though.

I'll be glad to share. Mine is definitely not a family secret. I have other bread recipes that are good also like jalepeno cheese bread and herb beer bread. I haven't made them so far this year.

Amish White Bread:

2 cups warm water (110F)
2/3 c. sugar
1 1/2 tsp. dry yeast
1 1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 c. oil
6 c. bread flour

Disolve yeast in warm water. Allow it to proof (until it looks like creamy foam) Mix in salt and oil. Add flour one cup at a time. (I use my Kitchen Aid mixer with the bread attachment on it) Knead on a litely floured surface for several minutes. Place in oiled bowl and cover with a camp cloth where it's warm until it doubles in bulk (about an hour to an hour and a half) Punch dough back down, knead for a few minutes then divide in two and place in two well oiled loaf pans (5x9) I used one loaf pan and made rolls with the other half so I placed them on an oiled surface and covered all and let rise for 30 minutes. Bake in 350 degree oven for 30 min.

I'd like the pumpkin bread recipe. We like pumpkin besides in pies. I often make a pumpkin custard. It's raining, hasn't started snowing yet but it's not cold enough yet. The passes are getting snow though. I can curl up under the afghan I'm finishing crocheting and keep warm while watching TV.
