Fun and funky to me is something like this ~

What do you think caused them to go bad, @wornoutmomto3
? I'm asking because I'm a n00b at this and looking to learn from others' mistakes if possible. (or if it was a mistake that caused it)

The first bad hatch was cooked. It was a classroom hatch and someone removed the temp sensor and over-heated the incubator. The second bad hatch may be the incubator was adversely damaged in the prior hatch. This third hatch is split between an old homemade 'bator (where i have to hand turn) and the problem 'bator(with auto turner). Hopefully, any issues have been worked out and there will be a bunch little babies running around a brooder by the end of the month.

I got my serama eggs down to about 43% humidity...I will candle again tomorrow. (Day 11)

My LG with 34 eggs is doing great. I candled some of the lighter colored eggs and could see small veins. (Day 5)

I just went out to look for eggs and one of my BO hens fluffed up and growled at me. I collected from the other nests (5 eggs) and placed them next to her and walked away. I came back and she has pulled all the eggs under her so I'm thinking we have a broody! I'm not sure how many she was already on, maybe 1 or 2. I will give her whatever other eggs we get today as well.

Glad to hear it's something correctable. It's amazing to me that my grandparents were ever able to incubate a chick. Of course I think hens were broodier back in the day - or at least they would keep older hens around if they got broody. Whatever the reasons I'm looking forward to this (my first) hatch. All my eggs are collected from my current hens. On day seven I had two clears and I broke one egg setting it (it rolled off the table - not into the 'bator). So I'm working with 38 eggs. I will need to add a second brooder....

My roos are both RIRs, but my hens are a mix of RIR and Black Star (1/2 RIR). It will be interesting to see what we come up with. We're at just about the 1/2 way mark today.

I don't have a "classroom" helping me, but I do have two grandchildren (nearly 7 and nearly 5 - both in May). They make it a lot of fun. And they are going to be SOOOOO egg cited when the eggs hatch out. My granddaughter (the almost 5 yo) is already talking about how KYUTE they're going to be.
