"Springing in the Chicks" 2016 April Hatch-a-Long Hosted by Mike & Sally

Quote: x2

I'm in! Expecting to set 6 Cuckoo Bluebar, some EE, and a few of our White Plymouth x EE mutts right around Easter, so we'll have eggs incubating in April for sure.
I am NOT loving Sancho, our EE roo right now, he attacked my pregnant daughter yesterday when she went out to pick up eggs. But, I'm very interested in finding out what size/color eggs his offspring will lay this spring/summer. Lt. blue (EE) roo x White Plymouth hen = large green? Feedback from those in the know would be greatly appreciated. (I really need a WP roo- I LOVE those huge light brown eggs!)

Welcome over!!!!

egg color should be a greenish shade depending on how blue and how tan each breed the darker egg the darker the green

Sally's link probably explains it all but eggs only come in white and blue... The other variations are caused by a brown pigment that some most chickens add at the end of the egg making process.. So if you have a blue egg laying roo and you breed it with a brown pigmented egg layer you will get the variations of green. Does that make sense?

I'm kinda scared of the swap I'm going to tomorrow. Someone is supposed to be there with Rhodebar and Legbar roos that they've been selling on our group for $3. I'm not sure I could pass up a Legbar roo for that price. I do need another roo though....

$3 is great price. What age. I've got a neighbor that sells his excess Roos for $2 at 6 weeks I'll pick some up from time to time.
