Weird news from the emu front... Unfortunately one of our chicks did not survive the night. It was pretty weak. It might have lived if I was providing around the clock care but I was just so tired I had to get a good nights sleep.

The weird part is that the 4th chick is still alive and has actually absorbed most all of its yolk... four days later! Everyday I was surprised that it was still alive. It was kind of gasping for air so I opened up the top of the egg so it could move its neck a bit and it is no longer gasping. Just chillin in the egg. I covered it with damp paper towels and gave it a good pep talk.

I wish I had left the chick that died in the incubator now, but I really didn't think this last egg was going to do much. I don't know if it will live but I am amazed by it so far, so I am going to hope for the best!

One of my week old Svarthonas sounds like a cricket chirping, Kinda cute, kinda annoying. Since he is 1/3 of the size of the other chicks he is just too cute.

by the way, where does everyone get the cute emojis? My iPad does not have them, if I need to download, please share

I can't use the BYC emoji's on my phone, you may be able to do it on your ipad if you use the full site version not the mobile version

okay so my hatch went far better than any of my others, this time I had all 8 hatch out! All are doing great, set another 11 bantam/silkie eggs

. I have noticed that often times when I loose a bird, especially a special bird, it is at a time when emotions are right at the surface. Sometimes I feel like birds almost sacrifice themselves for my well being. One of my first lessons in incubating was that the love I have for anything lives on even after it is gone and I have been reminded of that many times by my birds and animals.
Thank you for the kind sentiment. Seems a little odd at first that a bird can bring so much joy or sorrow, but it is a pet after all- I know my BYC peeps would understand.
Sir is buried in a little garden under the redwoods where we like to sit quietly. We're not yet decided on what type of flower we will plant near him, definitely something that resembles his fabulous updo!
Thanks again,
P (=

Hi everyone! Day 15 Candling - DONE! Out of 27 eggs set, 20 healthy looking eggs remain. Yay! How do you think my air cells look? See pics.

I think my post got buried....just wondered if everyone thought my air cells looked okay for Day 15. I'm thinking I'll up the humidity to 50% til Friday, lockdown day.
