Wonderful! Very exciting isn't it? Now the long wait for the zip.
I hear a little bit of chirping coming from my incubator today (due date is tomorrow)![]()

Weird news from the emu front... Unfortunately one of our chicks did not survive the night. It was pretty weak. It might have lived if I was providing around the clock care but I was just so tired I had to get a good nights sleep.
The weird part is that the 4th chick is still alive and has actually absorbed most all of its yolk... four days later! Everyday I was surprised that it was still alive. It was kind of gasping for air so I opened up the top of the egg so it could move its neck a bit and it is no longer gasping. Just chillin in the egg. I covered it with damp paper towels and gave it a good pep talk.
I wish I had left the chick that died in the incubator now, but I really didn't think this last egg was going to do much. I don't know if it will live but I am amazed by it so far, so I am going to hope for the best!
One of my week old Svarthonas sounds like a cricket chirping, Kinda cute, kinda annoying. Since he is 1/3 of the size of the other chicks he is just too cute.
by the way, where does everyone get the cute emojis? My iPad does not have them, if I need to download, please share![]()
okay so my hatch went far better than any of my others, this time I had all 8 hatch out! All are doing great, set another 11 bantam/silkie eggs
Congrats!! Can't wait for your pictures of fuzzy bottoms!!!
Thank you for the kind sentiment. Seems a little odd at first that a bird can bring so much joy or sorrow, but it is a pet after all- I know my BYC peeps would understand.Just wanted to send some love.. I have noticed that often times when I loose a bird, especially a special bird, it is at a time when emotions are right at the surface. Sometimes I feel like birds almost sacrifice themselves for my well being. One of my first lessons in incubating was that the love I have for anything lives on even after it is gone and I have been reminded of that many times by my birds and animals.![]()
It can be up to 24 hours. Yes, it can vary a lot! Be patient. Now that I have three pips I'm wondering - how long from pip to zip? Does it vary a LOT or are we talking about a few hours difference?
