"Springing in the Chicks" 2016 April Hatch-a-Long Hosted by Mike & Sally

We had 3 chickens (1 Serama and 2 Silkies) all broody and sitting on one little egg at the same time.  That's right, 3 chickens squeezed into 1 small basket. Well, they pushed it out of the nest and it was cold when we found it.  We brought it in the house and candled it and it's still alive.  My daughter and I decided it would be safer if we kept it in here.  Just don't know when it will hatch.  Looks like it will be soon.

If I really want my hen(s) to hatch their eggs, I separate them. All the fighting over eggs isn't beneficial to hatching.

Pretty mama! I am hatching silkies and bantam Cochins too... And a bunch of other things. ;). My Silkies have just started laying eggs, not sure when they will be fertile, I am dying hatch some eggs from them. I can't wait for these two paints to grow up!

I just hatched my 1st paint last week, so exciting because i wasn't exspecting it at all. As for when your silkies will be fertile, my pullets 1st egg was fertile and hatched healthy. So i'd say go for it if your ready.

Quote: oh my gosh yes this takes forever I've been to the basement a dozen times already! Man good exercise.... why did I put them in the basement????? Lol
I usually keep my incubators in the basement too.

Well Day 21 was Monday morning. My first-graders just went home for the day, and now that it is quiet, I hear peeping!!!! So they are later than they were supposed to be, but hopefully we will have some chicks by morning, or tomorrow! I'm so relieved! My students were so excited, and I did not want to break their hearts! Tomorrow will be a very exciting day in our classroom! I'm wondering if my little Brinsea was running cool, and that was why it took a bit longer. The thermometer inside does show about 95.5 rather than the 99.5 the incubator is set at. I may have to up it a bit for the next hatch. I am just so relieved that we have peeps! Yippee!!!!

First-graders, welcome to your most magical day of school ever!!!!
It probably was running on the cooler side.

I have one of my EE's almost out of the shell !!!

It's hard hatching an egg you rescued from a hen. No idea when it will hatch. Soon I think.
You should be able to candle and get a pretty good guess on where it is at.

Ugh! So I was filling up the water in the incubator. It is really jam packed...I went to get the water cup to fill it for the humidity and cracked an egg when I put it back! It was a very valuable egg from my friends flock. Then I went to set the egg I got from the hen that never lays, in that spot...and it cracked! So that means my bator says I'll have to set more next month...right?
(My friend is so kind, she offered one of the "millions" of chicks she has from that trio since I cracked one. Chicken friends are fantastic!)
Sorry the eggs got cracked. I think your incubator is right, set more next month. Nice friend.

Here's the first one. I'm not sure if that shell is simply lying on it or is stuck to its back. I'll leave it alone till morning I guess? Any suggestions?
Awww. Congratulations. If it is stuck, use a paper towel, wash cloth, or something damp with warm water to carefully get the wheel off.
Can i join???? Please, please, oh please!

I just accidentally won an ebay auction for some d'anver bantam eggs

. I bid in the last 1 second to see if that would work (nobody else had bid yet so it was cheap)... and it did work

. It was an auction for 8+, also my mom and brother really want me to get some more call duck eggs (enablers!

) so I might get more of those... plus 10 out of 12 chocolate orpington/cream legbar mix eggs I got (shipped eggs) are developing, and it looks like 6 out of 7 of my silver/choc ameracauna eggs are developing too. There are also the 5 silver quail eggs developing and 6 eggs from my ducks in the incubator too

What a great surprise!

Oh, I already put her first 3 in the bator.. no luck! I have a paint roo and black(split lavender) showgirl roo over black (split lavender) hens and one showgirl hen. All those Silkies are from the same breeder so I got the little paint chicks for some new blood and because they are adorable! I am dying for black, lavender and paint showgirl and silkie chicks! I had a couple Serama hens go broody so I bought some Silkie eggs for them to hatch.

Edited for spelling : )

Problem or role model?

It is true when you bid on eggs, you might win, even accidentally.
