Oh, haha thanks, she's actually not my bird, though I wish she could be. This is a splash Cochin and she is a breed that I have been looking to get forever. No luck yet. My laying girls consist of: Salmon Favorelle EE Blue Cochins And Cuckoo maroons I have lots of baby chicks that will be laying in 4 1/2 months, but there are to many breeds to name. Some of their breeds consist of porcelain d'Uccle, golden sebright, silver spangled Hamburg, EE bantam and all colors of silkie's Those are just the bantys. I don't ship eggs, but I might in the future. Once my babies start to lay I'll be selling hatching eggs and I'll be hatching baby chicks for my community. It's kind of a thing I would like to do for fun.

I love my ducks!! Yes, they are messy, I put them outside by 4 weeks because of how much POOP they created/water they splashed. But they absolutely LOVE it outside. They are Welsh Harlequin, and they are so cute! A bit skittish because I didn't socialize them enough, but I love them anyways! And the geese that hatched with them are HUGE already!

And yes, the hatching addiction is expensive...

Ducks certainly sound adorable!! But I don't know, my chickens tend to stay pretty clean mostly. Though I'm sure I could figure out how to make the ducks cleaner LOL

And yes I'm starting to see that

To spot the silkies from the others look for the black beaks.and the dark skin around the eyes.. The Cochins will have feathers on the legs too but will have yellow beaks unless they are black also. So far this year in my area (TN) the Cochins have been lavender and the Silkies have been buff which in baby down is yellow with silver tips. The little tiny chipmunk marked velocoraptors are OEG and they run around viciously pulling the feet fethers of the Cochins and Silkies. I have seen one or two that I thought were Booted Bantams because they didn't have beards like Danvers but were feather legged. Last year there were a lot of Fayoumis but I haven't seen any this year. They are dark brown down. You can go the Murray McMurray's web site and they have baby pictures for each breed. You can check out the bantam breeds baby pics and then you know what you are looking at when you go to TSC.

Wow thanksfor all the info!! Going off this so far it seems like they only have silkies. I will look on McMurray though!!

Just don't forget to breathe! It can be very heady at first. If you want to go with a incubator that has everything right off but won't break the bank, look at the ReptiPro. It can even be programed with cooling cycles and has auto turning racks. It runs between $150 and just short of $200 all tricked out with two turners. Nice thing is since you still seem to be at your parents and therefore are probably in school, this incubator can be programed and it will do what you want and you don't have to babysit it like you might a bare bones homemade machine. So you won't be stressing thinking about your eggs frying while you are supposed to be taking a test.

If you catch the building bug though (which can be as addicting as the hatching itself) I recommend the STC-1000 thermostat for temp control. Personally I am still experimenting with different heating elements: Light bulbs, Heat lamp bulbs, metal heating rod. I haven't tried the ceramic Edison coils yet. They screw into a light bulb socket but only give off heat not light. If you use the bulbs search for the ceramic bases. The plastic ones will get brittle and crack over time.
Being that you are still in school you will want an auto turner. You have too much to keep up with already to remember to turn 4 to 6 times a day. Pick something not terribly expensive to incubate first. Good egg layers that when you get your practice in and want to hatch your dream chickens you can sell them at a nice rate to make room/finance the expensive eggs

And I do still live at home, you're right on that, but technically I'm not in school at the moment, I didn't like my major plus was having problems so I've been home a while now, taken some classes locally, but anyways, I wanna find another school. Maybe an agricultural program or something. I shluld clarify I graduated high school in 2012, I just turned 22 in March. So I guess I'm really old and really behind on the school thing, I was only at the other one like a year and a half then the local classes. Sorry for rambling though. But you are still right that the auto turner would be better because I'm not sure I would even remember to turn.

Maybe I could find some common breeds like Barred Rock, Buff Orpington, Rhode Island Red, Black Australorp, Easter Egger, production red, red sex link or black sex link, etc. And incubate those and rehome them before getting into the expensive eggs like Silkies and rare colors of the above breeds, and Wyandottes,and Speckled Sussex. And ducks. Does this thing incubate ducks???

I need help though. One of them looks week. It doesn't move around to much, and it has it's eyes closed this morning. What should I do for it?

You could try carefully dripping some scrambled raw egg yolk in its beak or along the side a tiny bit at a time especially if you add more electrolytes to it. Without being there and seeing it's hard to know. How long ago did it Hatch? Was it sticky, could it have inhaled fluid during the hatch?

Ok i did the egg yolk mixed with electrolytes. It looked like it got some down. It cheeps loudly but it doesn't move to much. I saw it's eyes open for a few seconds. How often should I give the egg yolk? It hatched the day before yesterday .

Will do. I hope you can get some. Cochins are amazing! You will love them, they are super cute and beautiful. I love mines personalities. I know a hatchery that sell those breeds and ship all over the country if you'd like they are called chickensforbackyards hatchery. They are not that popular but they are really good. I got all of my birds from them.

Yes! I will hopefully be getting some molted Cochin bantams from mypetchicken hatchery this summer or next year. I just wish they had the splash. They are! Sadly our only EE bantam is a cockerl and we aren't sure yet if we are keeping it. Little stinker, he had to choose to be a boy. :/ lol
