interesting. I know air cell is in fat end but everyone I know holds egg fat end up and applies light upward from the pointed end. Never seen or heard of doing it any other way.

I used the candle the button quail eggs alot years ago.

I'll try again when the eggs hit day 7 and try your way instead

Sorry, I've never heard of doing it the way your describing.

Applying light through the air cell will allow you to see the air cell better and to see what going on. These are some duck eggs I candled last night on day 4. Going down through the air cell allows better penetration of light into the egg.

everyone does stuff different I guess. I was taught back in the 80's by a Cochin breeder and the commercial candler products seem to work the same. Light at pointed end up through egg and draw air cell at top of wide end

If you have a bright enough light than doing it that way might be possible. Most people don't use a bright enough light in the first place though.

Um hum, just to see you get all mushy over them. Not that I think any baby animals are cute nor do I ever come home with stray puppies, kittens, orphan birds, etc. Nope, not me, never.....

I do admit.... I might get a bit mushy, but no more than a 2 week old banana.

Forgot to ask, when do clears start to smell/explode. I am very sure i have some but none smell. When should i expect that??

Clears don't explode unless there is bacteria inside.... I left mine in till lockdown and notta.... Broke it open, it looked like I coulda ate it.

how do you keep yourself from opening the bator up the take the one lil chick out? It's heartbreaking listening to it cry. I know don't it will shrinkwrap the others up. but it's in there yelling mommy come back mommy mommy LOL

I've had ducks before when I had a pond in Arkansas. I had Pekin and Rouen. If I DO decide to get ducks again, I'm going to go with the Rouen. I found them a little more personable and certainly more colorful. I didn't know much about incubating the eggs but misted them and turned them 2x a day and I had a good hatch percentage, probably around 80% or better. Started with a pair of Pekin and a pair of Rouen and ended up with about 22 ducks. (Way too many!) I don't remember what I fed them but mostly let them forage. They were too skidish and I eventually gave up trying to get them into a roost at night. They slept outside. I lost 4 to predators over a year's time. If a novice like me could hatch them, I don't foresee you having ANY problems.

Yeah, that's the way I did it at first, too; it works so much better candling from the top.
