"Springing in the Chicks" 2016 April Hatch-a-Long Hosted by Mike & Sally

@Sally Sunshine we ended up actually taping two of the six holes closed-too much cool air. Hubs cut them with a hole saw and then cut the portion of the top of the cooler out and replaced it with an old 8X10 glass. Took about four days to get the set-up just right as far as temp and humidity. The funny thing is that he told me I couldn't spend any more money on chickens but then he made me the incubator.

holy air holes   great re purpose!

you betcha!!!
are those day 18 marks?
awwwwww how cute!!!!!  so adorable!!!!  I love that quilt!!! great color and pattern combos!

Not day 18 maybe day14, had an unexpected hatch therefore went into lockdown unprepared. Said unexpected hatchee is the one on the quilt, handmade quilt from my godmothers mom

Day 19. Just now had one external pip and one internal pip. First time trying to hatch eggs so I super nervous that even now I could lose them all. 14 shipped eggs and only 6 made it to lockdown. I'm so nervous : (
Good Luck!!!!!

Just keep swimming... just keep swimming... just keep swimming swimming swimming...

7-week old chicks moved from big brooder to separate coop and run.
1-week old chicks outgrowing the mini brooder so tomorrow I'll clean the big brooder and out they go.
1 chick 1 pip 1 egg in the MacGyverbator.
Next candle on 20-something eggs is Saturday night.

Discovered pests in the coop so delaying the separation of the Brabanters to more easily treat the whole flock.
Depending on treatment the egg setting plans may change too.

Aww congrats! It's so adorable!

I didn't hear the story what happened?
3 broody chickens sitting on a nest with one egg. I guess it was too crowded so the egg was pushed out. It was very cold when we found it. Didn't think it would make it but we stuck it in the incubator. It hatched today!

So, I discovered / realized that the auto turner on the incubator was unplugged tonight.  I have no idea how long it has been unplugged, I know it was over 24 hours though.  So, we will see how this effects my already set-late-shipped-with-abnormal-aircell eggs.  UHHHHH!!!!  :barnie :he :hit

They should be fine! Sometimes I get a little lazy about turning and they still do okay :)

Blooie gifted me her svart hona egg prize from the Easter food contest.

The breeder who donated them's hen went broody so they weren't able to send them yet. Since I'm new to hatching I've been thinking of getting some cheapo hatching eggs on eBay to practice and to test the incubator so I don't wreck the fancy eggs. I'll see how that goes. I think the incubator is ready but I'm also still trying to figure if it'll be worth it to buy or make an egg turner.
Sounds like a plan to me. And it doesn't sound like your excitement has diminished any either!

oh gooodie!!!! @Blooie I will get on that box of eggs your requested, you certain you want four plus dozen?????

muwahhahhahhahhaaa
No problem about those 4 dozen eggs, Sally...I'll take 'em. I've got room in my coop for 2 more chicks, and with my current track record that's all I'll end up with. <sigh>

Got 28 eggs. Broke one the first day. Set 27 eggs. Got 2 chicks. One's a roo. Oh, well!
