Spurs

It depends on the rooster whether you need to remove the spurs. Some breeds like Cochins have nubby spurs that usually don't get very long and sharp, while other breeds can grow spurs as long and sharp as daggers.

If your rooster has long, slender, sharp spurs, obviously they could present a danger should he decide to attack a human or mount a hen.

So, no, you wouldn't need to worry about removing spurs that are short and rounded on the tips. It's a judgement call.

It was interesting to read that Cochins spurs are usually short and nubby. I had a Cochin with long sharp spurs. He is a very calm rooster, but my hens were losing feathers on their backs, so I had to do something.

I watched a Utube video about twisting them off. I finally got up the nerve. It was very easy to do, my 11 year old even helped me. I moistened them with olive oil, then took a pair of plyers and gently twisted back and forth until I felt it give, then it popped right off. What was left was a red soft short spur. He did not even flinch! I put a little betadine, then put him up to roost. It hardened in a couple of days. I am not sure if it will grow back longer again, but if it does I will do it again.

My roo is 4-1/2 yrs w/ spurs @ 4-5 in. long. I have never cut them, he is skiddish of me.

But, he is having trouble walking.

I'd like to go over the following . . .

  • "Hot Potato Method" Spur Removal
  • Hold Rooster gently but firmly.
  • Make the Potato(s) as Hot as can be:
  • ?? Hold Potatoe(s) on Spurs 5 -10 min until Spur sheath / covering slides or pops offs, RIGHT ??
  • What will be left on the leg when the Spur comes off ? How big will it be ?
  • What do I do with it now ???

Please Please get back to me ASAP ~

Thank You
Nikki

Our little bantam rooster spurred the heck out of my husband yesterday. So now I won't let the kids feed or water him anymore. He has to wait til my husband comes home. We may just take care of those spurs this evening. That or rehome his mean rear end

If you rehome him, please give full disclosure.

Best thing is to invite him to dinner. Even a bantam can make a nice pot of soup.
