To keep cool?? lol You mean you actually have flowers? Heck, something here is always eating mine. If its not the chickens, its the guineas, if its not the ducks, its the geese. lol

Oh yea ,the flowers are right in there among the weeds. My birds are no longer free range, and the goats have only escaped on the back of my property so the flowers are blooming except where my Great Pyrenese dug them up=P On a different topic, the monthly egg swap is open, sign up and enjoy your surprise pack of hatching eggs:woot

I lost the battle with my one legged hen today. She was enjoying her day in the grass, under the shade tree. When I went to take her in this evening, she had died. It's strange, because her stump had healed, but she quit trying to walk and just gave up I guess. A raccoon had grabbed her through a small gap near the door , and chewed her foot off. I had to separate her from the other chickens, because they would peck at her even though she had healed up. My friend in Selmer lost about 20 some odd chickens to raccoons before they finally shot it. I realize they are just trying to get something to eat, but I am totally fed up with them. This one is too smart for the trap. I may have to spend a night outside to get the job done.:-/

Well, if I caught the barn cat I could get it vaccinated and neutered, plus find out what sex it is. I am calling it Wisp because it is small and grey. The poor thing just showed up recently, I think the people next door left it when they moved. I was needing something to eat mice anyway.
That coon is too smart to get in a trap, must have been trapped/ released before. Even a whole dead chicken didn't tempt it.

Try knock-off little debbie Honey Buns. I've caught many "smart" raccoons on those things but I use the generic ones because I think the LD's ones are too expensive just to catch a stupid raccoon. Also attracts skunks and other small trash-digger critters.

Wanted to add that we hatched 6 of the 9 eggs that I got from Gamebirdsonly! They are such cute little chipmunk chicks running around in the brooder! I love that look in chickens! Classic pattern on the adult welsummers and classic look as chicks. That what I think of when I picture a chicken.
Also had very good results from our own welsh harlequin eggs, can't wait to see how those turn out for the people we sent eggs to.

Hatching tonight: Gold Laced Orpingtons (CO), Black Orpingtons, Buckeyes (TN), Blue Orpington Bantams, Buckeye Bantams.

These are 3 Blue Orpington Bantams and 1 Black Orpington Large fowl.

Yay for the LF chick! So cute, and don't they just grow like weeds? Love my chickens. Some of them were watching me working today on the grow out pen, got the wire on all sides and top, just need to build the door and dig a trench for the perimeter wire. The heat really zaps your energy, and limits the hours when it is cool enough to work. I'll be glad when it's done.:)
