Squashed shell/egg? - day 19

I’ve tried to candle it but nothing can be seen from it and I can’t find where the beak would be to place a hole. It’s still in the DIY incubator.
Honestly that does look pretty bad. I agree with you, I think it's passed. You can always do an egg autopsy if you want and see what happened/how it looked before it passed. I would triple check though before opening it up just in case there's any chance it's still alive. Follow the others advice and try to locate the beak/head and start very slowly on that end.

Was there always that much shell missing? Like @JCaseyHammond said, just give it a moment. There is a good chance it didn't survive, but it doesn't hurt to wait. Have you checkteh temp and humidity of your DIY incubator with a calibrated thermometer?

with that much shell missing you should be able to see the chick moving some here and there if it was still alive. Sorry..but I'd say it's a goner.

This may not be the best information, however if the other eggs have started to hatch, IMHO you have nothing to loose by trying to help hatch this mashed egg. Go slowly, try to find an opening where the beak is, I hope you have luck with this chick, just know you have tried everything you could to help it along. Good Luck @Jadegle87
Upon seeing the photo, my first thought is “suffocated”. I agree, start peeling off the membrane. You’re doing either an assisted hatching or an eggtopsy. I’m sorry
Edited to add, please everyone, if the chick didn’t make it, understand that a stepped-on egg is a hazard of hatching under a broody. As compared with hatching in an incubator. I’m sorry

I tried peeling back the membrane of the chick bit by bit to help it but the chick was dead. I’ll definitely be more prepared if this happens again, so thank you everyone for your help again.
Well you did more than what most people would. Thank you for trying. Sorry you had to go through that :(

I’m so sorry :hugs we couldn’t save this chick.
Watching broody hens with their chicks drinking, eating, dust bathing, and playing is an incredible joy.

Yet at times, broody hens can be exasperating. They insist on hatching where everyone else prefers to lay eggs, or a newbie broody jumps in excitement rather than sit quietly on hatching eggs.

I hope the joy of watching your broody hen raise her chicks balances the loss of this one. And if you have time to post a pic of them, I’d be grateful. :jumpy :hugs
