1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.)
3 Wyandotte chicks, 6 weeks old, I haven't weighed them but they feel similar in weight. 1 is more feathered than the others making it look larger.
2 of 3 chicks are affected.

2) What is the behavior, exactly.
Breathing with an open-beak
chick #1) wheezes/squeaks on every breath
chick #2) just open mouth breaths
chick #3) no symptoms
Sneezing occasionally - sometimes there will be a small spray, sometimes not. There is NO discharge from the nostrils or eyes.

3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms?
Sneezing - maybe 1 week?
Wheezing/squeaking during breathing - only 1 day

4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms?
Only 1 is squeaking on each breath. Chick #2 beathes with it's beak open. This symptom goes away after I put VetRX (like vicks for chicks) on the beak; it can breathe from it's nostrils again. Chick #1 does not improve from VetRX, still squeaks.

5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma.
no

6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation.
We have had some sunny weather recently, so I let them have time outside in the grass. They have a small circle pen 100ft away from the main flock's fenced range area. It's been 80-90 here, I provide them with shade and water/food when outside.

7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all.
I have been giving PolyViSol and honey mixed in water a few drops by beak daily (honey is an electrolyte).
I have provided oatmeal in addition to the regular medicated feed.
I have given them teramycin anti-biotic in water for the last week or so.

8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc.
Normal I think, no blood for sure.

9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far?
teramycin, polyvisol, VetRX
the anti-biotic doesn't seem to be doing anything, I think I will replace it with a pro-biotic water soon.

10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet?
I plan to treat myself, cannot afford to take chickens to vet

11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help.
I will try to take a video soon

12) Describe the housing/bedding in use
They are in a wire dog crate with 6inch cardboard walls around the edges. They have natural wood pellet bedding. With only 3 chicks, this bedding has not been soiled enough to change out. The pellets break down into sawdust when wet; usually I brood a lot more chicks than just 3. With 3, I have never changed the bedding. There isn't very much dust, that is why I use the pellets over pine shavings. I can change the bedding out, but the newer bedding smells strongly of pine so I thought that might be bad timing for a change.
I also unplugged their Brinsea Brooder recently. It is 70-75 in my house, and they also got introduced to the outdoors, so I figured it was time to unplug their heat source. It is now plugged back in since the sick 1 seems to like warmth.

if it is MG, wouldn't there be more discharge from the nostrils and/or eyes? how can I tell if it's MG or not? I have also read about gapeworm, but I can't see anything inside their mouths..

yeah, just since today, and the reason Im making this thread. I think she didn't sleep good last night and she is just exhausted because she can't breathe.. I have not seen her eat today either. she is the worse one..

the other chick is making coughing(?) or sneezing? sounds now too!

I am going to change out their bedding. I am giving the chick in the video a breathing treatment in a steamy room will see if that helps at all?
edit: steam room no change. also made a garlic brew and let her inhale it to no change

she is still the same.. can anyone help? :(
laying, not opening eyes, squeaking or wheezing with every breath. has not eaten all day, poop is just white. he/she will not even take water at this point to get the vitamins and electrolytes in him! has had teramycin in it's water for days leading up to this, but didnt make a difference

Have you ever had any respiratory diseases with the older hens, or have their been many wild birds around the feeders? Chicks that age will have more serious symptoms to diseases such as infectious bronchitis, and with a virus such as IB, there can be secondary infections. Is there any wet areas or mold that could be causing the symptoms? If you have added any new birds to the flock, there can always be a chace that someone is a silent carrier. Tylan 50 given orally might be a better antibiotic, but if it is a virus, it won't respond to AB's.

I will try tylan 50 tomorrow, thank you for the suggestion!

I do not add adult birds to my flock, I hatch my own. I have brought in eggs from outside breeders but I am careful to disinfect my hands after handling inncubating eggs, just in case. I practice bio security and do not wear outside footwear (feed store) on my property or near the chickens. I don't let any other poultry owners visit. I don't handle any one else's birds, ever. Wild birds are a real possibility, we live out a ways on land and there are probably a hundred species of wild bird here in Oregon.

I live on property that has had poultry on it in it's ancient past, but not in the last 10 or so years. I think it was about 30 ? years ago. This would only apply to the land they have access to, poultry housing is all new construction. My older hens don't have any symptoms. The closest thing would be panting during hot weather, no one has wheezing coughing or sneezing. I regularly provide the flock with a rotation of probitiocs, ACV, and nutridrench in addition to grower feed and pasture. I will be keeping a close eye on them in case anyone else starts acting the same way.

ugh, he just died! I heard banging around in the brooder and I think it was having the death seizure because it was gone when I looked. I have never performed an autopsy before and would not know what to look for. I did freeze the body after many wrappings and sanitations to see if I can find a lab that will test it for me? I read UC Davis does testing for free, is that open to people outside CA I wonder?

I found this link from Oregon State, there is a $30 necropsy fee which includes "gross examination" but not testing, that is extra. Judging from the price list, I am expected to tell them what to test for? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of testing? http://vetmed.oregonstate.edu/diagnostic/tests Any suggestions for necropsy lab and what to request they test for? (I don't see IB on this list?)

After reading about IB, it does sound very similar. I am more than willing to vaccinate for it, if that is what it is. I have chicks in another room (completely sealed off and trying to keep them from catching it, god help me) in addition to outside hens, and eggs in the incubator due in a week.

I am reading about a combination newcastle/IBV vaccine, would you recommend using that for future chicks? would it be better to test first or vaccinate first?

here is the vaccine I found:
"Vaccine aids in prevention of Newcastle Disease and infectious bronchitis, Massachusetts Type and Connecticut Strain."

Thanks, that link is very helpful.

Chick #2 seems to be doing well, no gasping, sometimes sneezing. Chick #3 still has no symptoms at all. The chicks in the brooder are quarantined off and are only visited for a food/water refill once a day after I've had a shower. I hope they don't catch this

My big chickens don't show signs, either
