I have an 8 month old pullet who I noticed about 2 days ago has a very full crop. The first day I noticed it she had really bad breath but by the second day her breath doesn't smell at all. The day I noticed it she had been out foraging all over my property. As far as her behavior she acts perfectly fine. Perhaps a little more noise (she's a loud chicken) but I think that's because she has been in quarantine. I took away her food and gave her some Olive oil the first day as well. I don't have a cage for her yet so I just made a little run for her in the yard so she is in a short grass area. Also her comb is now bright red whereas usually it's sort of pale. This is the third day and I need to know what to do please!? I read the article on here about crops but she doesn't fit all the symptoms of any of them. Please please any advice is appreciated!

Following...would love to hear from more experience people on this matter since I've experience them on my barred rock couple of years ago then it went away after giving her ACV in their water.

Just got back from checking on her... there's quite a bit of poop in her run..most of it is normal, there was one pile that was pretty water. Also forgot to mention she laid an egg last night. Today as I was massaging her crop her comb went back to it's normal color and she went to sleep. So I'm pretty sure her comb coloring is just cuz she hates to be alone.

Feel of her crop first thing in the morning to see if it is still puffy. She may just have a slow crop. I have little experience with crop issues, but it can be very hard to treat. Just make sure there is actually a problem first. Here are a few good articles about crop problems to help you:

Ok so after reading a million different things online, I'm pretty sure she has a doughy crop. I started her on the spice concoction. Once yesterday and so far once today although I'm getting ready to give it to her again. Everyone seems to have good success with that mixure but it seems like a few of her old symptoms are back: gaping mouth at times and moving her neck all around in unnatural ways. She's still completely alert and talkative however. I really don't want to make her vomit because I read it can be dangerous so I guess that's a last result. I don't have money for a vet right now.

With a doughy crop, she only needs water and crop massage several times a day. Add some vitamins with electrolytes to her water. Also add a tsp of plain yogurt or probiotics daily. Tomorrow morning if it seems to be emptying, you could give her a little raw egg with the yogurt, but no solids or whole grains until it has gone down. Keep massaging the crop. Vomiting is not a last resort, but just read how to do it correctly. Doing it for too long an interval can cause aspiration of crop contents into the airway.

I fed her wet food mixed with yogurt..only a small amount. Then when she was cleaning herself she threw up on her own. I guess it took away some of the fear cuz I took her outside and made her throw up. She only did it the first time and the 2 tries after nothing came out. Both times she threw up it was very very little but I'm thinking it's a step in the right direction?!

I guess I'm reading conflicting things about the feeding then. I took her food away a day and a half ago tho so I know she's hungry. I gave her yogurt yesterday but not very much. So I guess I'll stop with the wet food and just do yogurt and maybe a little baby food? I feel bad starving her for so long. It's been 3 days of this full crop and I don't want it to go sour or get worse. She's my favorite so I really need her to be ok!

If her crop is full you don't have to worry about her going hungry. It's like putting more on top of an already full stomach of sorts. Just water with vitamins til you can feel it's empty. Then she will be hungry afterwhats in there is gone.

Well her crop is about 50% empty but the last 2 days it has stayed the same. This is day 5 now so she's starving. Her crop is very doughy, she's still pooping alot but it's very water, and she's still very alert and loud which is normal. I've been giving her about 2 teaspoons of yogurt and 1 teaspoon of baby food squash spread out throughout the day. Her breath doesn't smell at all. Sometimes after her yogurt she does this involuntary neck roll thing. She also has her mouth open for periods throughout the day. But she still acts normal. I've tried helping her throw up but nothing.

I've given her the spice mixture suggested on this site for a doughy crop but now that we're at a stand still I'm ordering the acidified copper sulfate online. I guess my question is, is there anything else I can do to make this less horrible. I have her in a dog crate with nothing but a perch and water. Can she have any other foods since it's not really impacted by something hard? Scrambled eggs?
Thank u!
