I think SSS stands for shoot shovel and Shut UP. That's what I would do. Especially with any irrationality on the owners part.

We had a similar situation when a neighbors dog attacked our flock. I was talking to an old time farmer around here and said that I would take it to a pound far away and just tell the owner that we took care of it. (The owner actually told us to shoot his dog) The farmer told me to take it to the pound, kill it, whatever, but NOT to say anything. I thought that was interesting. She is one of those righteous pillars of the community types. I think I would probably follow her advice. (It was the farmer's wife I was talking to) She seemed pretty sure that it was a bad idea to talk. Also around here the animal has to be IN THE ACT of killing your livestock for you to legally be able to shoot it. It would be pretty hard to prove after it was dead. Animal control told me that dead chickens would not be proof that it actually was killing them AT THE TIME. I would be cautious though. The original SSS probably shouldn't have said anything to anyone.

I hope you're joking right. All animal control officers that I have seen (in two different cities) can't catch a 3 legged dog unless it's tame enough to jump itself into the back of their truck.

Most states, at least those down here in the south, have LAWS stating that domestic dogs may be shot if caught in the process of "running livestock" much less killing livestock. Government officials aren't required to be called first. This is one of the GOOD points about chickens being considered livestock on the law books. If you don't know your state laws, you had best either keep your mouth tightly shut and/or consult a lawyer on the matter.

Yes that is true. But animal control saying something is no better than tom down the road saying something out his rear.
In court you can't prove a negative. How are they gonna prove it WASN'T killing your livestock??? He said - she said. Except, I've got dead birds to bring to court as evidence.
Good luck with that one mr irresponsible dog owner.

As they always say Silence IS GOLDEN! The Dog is no more Problem!!!!!!!
Case is close and besides the neighbor should be thankful! He gets a free ride out of court! NO Fines NO Court cost

I'd keep my mouth shut. If AC was asking about the dog's whereabouts and charges were being brought there's a fair chance that the dog my have bitten someone. In which case, it would cause even more trouble for the irresponsible dog owner to not be able to produce the dog. And the more trouble they have over this dog, the less likely they are to go out and get another dog to be equally irresponsible with. Besides, depending on the laws in your area AC might then be coming after the person who shot the dog for animal cruelty or whatever charges might be applicable regardless of what the irresponsible owner is being charged with.
