Wendy I agree with you. It would bother me knowing the dog's owners family is going to heck, assuming they are caring people in the first place. However telling the person could cause a LOT of additional problems and they would be the one's responsible for it, not the guy who shot it.

I live in Tennesse and I agree he had all rights to shoot the dog....chickens are as much pets as a dog! You have the right to protect your person and property! If the dog did it one time it will again!

My dog killed all of my ducks..and when we caught her..she happily ran up to us to give us kisses..
She didnt want to rip our faces off...

She ran up to us all happy... proud of her work and fun she had...
Shes a DOG!..she did what dogs NATURALLY do...
She had fun chasing all the squeaky things around the yard....

Shes not a mean dog by ANY means... or i can promise you..i would have her put down in a heartbeat...
If i EVER saw ANY (And i DO mean ANY..) human agression issues with her..she would be brought to the vets and put down humanely..
I do NOT tolerate ANY human agression in a dog...never.
A dog thats attacks chickens is NOT at any more risk to attack a human... they ARE 2 seperate things...
A dog KNOWS the difference between a human and a chicken...
Now.. if the dog is a HUMAN AGRESSIVE dog... or a FEAR BITER... then YES.. they can bite a human if you try to stop the attacking dog......

People, you cannot make a generalization for all dogs on that. A dog on a killing spree should be approached with extreme caution. Wendy, that dog was YOUR dog, knew YOU. A strange dog is completely different. No comparison at all.

I feel for the chicken owner with this case. A Lot of people that do not own chickens really have no clue what they mean to us. If the man loved his dog as much as I love my dog he would had cared for it as much as I care for mine. I think that the courts should get swamped with letters of support for the chicken owner.

I am so sorry for your attack... I know it was traumatizing to experience and deal with the effects. I however stand by my opinion (of which I am entitled). I specifically stated I don't advocate at large dogs, but I also refuse to paint all dogs with the same brush. It is tragic and horrible and infuriating that a child is mauled by a dog..... but that does not mean a dog that kills a chicken will attack a child.
Yep, I laugh at the concept of all chicken killing dogs are going to for sure attack a child.... I have unfortunately had chicken / rabbit killers, but they never ever showed aggression (killing a chicken is not necessarily aggression - my young Lab killed 5 who just didn't survive his "joyful retrieve".... they never lost a feather). I notice you say a "stray" dog - that dynamic changes the who theme of this thread - shooting someone's pet over 1 (only 1 implied) incident.

I'm with her on that dogs that attack chickens and other 'Prey' Animals WILL eventually, if in the right situation, KILL or maul children. I was not 2 years old and a dog with only small animal attacks, A family pet, tore my face up. If the animal had been put down for showing aggression towards other animals then that would not have happened and 20 years later I would not be left with scars on my face.

Dogs that kill chickens will if in the right circumstances kill children.

By the way. Want to know what that owner got? A slap on the wrist and sent home with their 'beloved' pet.

Know what I got? A fear of all things doctor related, bad enough they HAVE to gas me just to draw blood along with months of recovery and surgeries, I had to have another surgery just two years ago from that incident.

One incident is ALL IT TAKES to kill a kid. ONE incident is all it takes to show the animals true nature, whether or not the owner wants to believe it. Shoot or put to sleep the aggressive(Chicken Killer) dogs or it may be YOUR family pet that maims your friends child next.

Not so, read again. The dog broke out of HIS owner's electric fence.

Not intending to fuel the fire, but I don't get the concept that the dogs should be locked up but not the chickens? I have dogs and chickens - and I have worked very hard to keep at least 2 fences between them, and a really sturdy one to keep the dogs in my yard.

I was going to read the whole thread, but i got to this post, and i had to respond.

I don't care how someone keeps their dogs off of my property. And it doesn't matter how i keep my chickens on mine. If my chickens are on MY property, fence or not, then any animal or person who hurts them on MY property is the one at fault, not me. I have no legal obligation to restrain you from getting on my property.

Likewise, if my dog is on someone else's property, and she gets shot, i will cry and moan and grieve and bury her, and i will not even mention it to whoever shot her except to apologize for their having to do so. It's ridiculous (by my way of thinking) to expect someone to tolerate my animals mucking up whatever they've got going on at their house.

And if my chickens are on someone else's property, that's my bad too. And if your dog kills them while they're on your property, then i don't blame you or the dog. My chickens or my dogs not on my property is my fault. Period. And whatever you do to defend yours from mine run amuck is perfectly justified. Period.

You have no obligation to tolerate what you don't wish to tolerate on your property - especially not predator dogs killing your pets or livestock.

ETA: Quite a few posts here have suggested that financial compensation would cover it. It wouldn't. It's not the cost of a chicken. It's my time, my investment, for many of us part of our personal food sovereignty projects and plans. It's a personal emotional energy investment that cannot be compensated for. I'm not sure i would even accept money for something like that.
