Day 7 for me! Candled all 48 eggs. Looks like I have one blood ring and four clears. A couple of the clears are Marans, so I'm going to keep them all in for now. Re-check on day 10 to see if anything has changed. I couldn't believe how long it took me to weigh, record, and candle them all. Took almost an hour. Did six or seven at a time so they wouldn't be out of the incubator for that long.

We did the same tonight! 48 shipped eggs, 20 were moving and grooving, 4 were detached air sac, and 24 were put back to check again next week. What is blood ring? This is only my second hatch.

A blood ring is when a chick starts to develop, and then dies very early on. It literally looks like a red circle around the egg. I have heard that shipped eggs tend to get them more than non-shipped. The one that I have that I think has it is a shipped egg, so maybe it is true.

I think I saw a few of those. I am gonna candle again, but don't know what day is best....what do you all suggest?

You don't need to candle unless you want to. There are people who don't ever candle. They just watch for stinkers and leakers. Other people candle every day. Usually, if you're going to candle, people do it on days 10 and 18. Since I am adjusting my humidity based on weight, I am candling on the weigh in days, too. So, days seven, fourteen and eighteen. I am also going to re-check the five I had questions about on day 10.

It is funny, because when I was a kid in high school, I bred parakeets and lovebirds. I don't remember doing much more than putting the eggs in the incubator. I knew what candling was, but I am sure I didn't have a schedule or anything. Never worried aout humidity either. Had lots of successful hatches, though.

A word of caution about blood rings. I have made a mistake in the past of pulling out what I thought was an obvious blood ring that turned out to be a viable egg. Sometimes they get thick veins that circle the top and look like a red ring. Anyway, I leave blood rings in a for a few days just to be sure, unless they're leaking obviously. That's just my experience.

It must have been you that posted something about that. Your experience is the reason I am keeping it in another three days. I'm going to do a recheck at 10 days and see if anything has changed. Same thing with my dark Marans and Barnevelders. They look clear, but I'm keeping them in anyway.

I switched all our vein eggs to one bator, and the ones to recheck in the other. What day should I recheck the eggs, day 10 or wait til next Sat?
