Standard bred Sumatras

I was beginning to think this thread had died since no one was
posting. It's good to see some activity.

I know it's pretty much dead here and no one is posting here hardly at all but
as for the post with the combs pictures. Which of those combs are desired and why?
I have an idea but I'm trying to learn more and any new to Sumatra folks looking
here would not know which are better.

Personally, I think the dun pullet has the better comb, it has three rows (just hard to see) and is straightest of all I pictured. The second best is the black pullet, she also has three small rows (even harder to see) But she has a small bend/wrinkle in it close to the beak.

Would love to know what others think/ feel on these.

I think its dead right now because its getting to the busy time of year. The show season approaches!

In all honestly, the combs pictured are not really a good representation of an ideal pea comb. Though I think there is definitely potential using that male. Obviously there is room for improvement, but if you overlook the curve at the front, its the best one of the group. the two black hens do not have a pea combs at all. I hate sounding negative, which I why I don't like critiquing pictures and on the web.

Pea combs are challenging and I find it even more so in sumatras due to fact it gets overlooked a lot. Even I need LOTS of work on mine.

First off, I know my birds aint the best

, but if they can help others with what to look for and all, by all means point out the good, the bad, and the ugly. Don't feel bad for being honest, as honesty can only help in the long run

(well in my book anyways)

My camera sucks, but the black pullet and dun pullet have a small line of bumps on either side of the main ridge on their combs towards the back (neither goes down the length of the combs, the dun's is a little more visible). The rooster does have 3 rows, just the outside two aren't very defined, and the middle ridge sticks way above them. He does have a curve in the front, one thing I'll be looking for with my daughter when we go through her offspring from him. I'll have to get some more pictures of some of my other birds.

I wonder, for the most part, if the hens haven't lost the outer ridges of the pea comb due to breeders trying to get the comb as small as possible per standard?

I think a lot of people are thankful that you post pictures. It always helps when discussing topics. So thank you for sharing. Yeah maybe the picture doesn't show the ridges very well. As for me even if the male's comb does have a way higher middle ridge, he still has three prominent ridges (at least from looking from the top down). That gives you something to build upon. Definitely a positive. If there is nothing but bumps and curves, then its hard to get a good foundation to work with. As I think I said before, I think we tend to look at size and color more than shape of the comb on a hen. Though we want small combs. It is still possible to get the 3 ridges for a pea comb.
