Start to finish coop build. Lots of pics and some ideas I found on youtube.

We found a little chicken coop on craigslist but when we actually saw it decided it was too small but decided to buy it anyways. The whole ride home I was thinking of how I was going to "extend" it. The rest of the images will tell the story of how it was built. Most of the wood was from a construction site, asked the foreman, and got a lot of good wood. Very thankful. In fact most everything was free except original coop, the water cups, the 55 gallon water barrel, and the hardware cloth. All wood was coated in blackjack roof coating to waterproof it and seams of the roof were sealed with 3M 5200. Wood was also glued and screwed with titebond 3. Cups were leaking so those got some 5200 too. Tree is made from all the scrap PVC I had leftover.

Looks like a nice little coop!

So the black "paint" is all BlackJack? Hmm, don't think I've seen anyone use it outside before, should be interesting to see how well it weathers.

Does the "wood" finish on the PVC have some grip to it? PVC is too slippery to use as roosts.

It looks like a rubbery surface - and the hens are roosting on it!
That tree is really cool.

Thanks, yes it is somewhat smooth, but so is a pine tree branch that is old and the bark is all removed. To get to at least that consistency I rubbed the whole thing down with 80 grit, to hold the stain, then put deep grooves in it palming a hole saw, then used another saw to go a little deeper, then used the torch to put bends and pits all in it. They can grab onto it fine Iithink. I have 4 chickens and usually 3 of them are in it different times of the day. Super easy to do though.

Its a roof coating so it's supposed to be outside. We'll see though, its been two months since the frame and roof was built and the water still beads up and runs off of it. I figure if there is a problem in some years I just replace it. The wood was free but even to replace it is only 75$ and the can of blackjack was 15$.

Exactly...should be fine.
How many coats did you apply?
Is the plywood roof outdoor rated or pressure treated?

Pretty nice coop mod and run!

Welcome to BYC! @Heetxs
Guessing you're from Texas....but.....
Where in this world are you located?
Climate, and time of year, is almost always a factor.
Please add your general geographical location to your profile.
It's easy to do, and then it's always there!

Sorry i'll fix it, from northeast florida. Did 4 coats of blackjack on the roof and two on everything else. The roof will not last forever, just couldn't afford to do a full metal roof yet. Covid took us both out of work for my other halfs medical reasons. This is just regular plywood from a construction site they had left over and were going to toss out. The blackjack was just to protect it because that wood alone wouldn't have lasted 6 months. It now doesn't leak at all (it did until i sealed the seams with 5200). The coop isn't even what I would consider permanent, it is also temporary until I build the fully incorporated coop. This is what im working with for now.
