Started my coop today!!

Hmm... that would be really cool to look at and plan... (hint hint)

I just finished my coop last weekend. I wanted some roll out boxes, as I plan to sell some of my eggs. There wasn't much info on BYC about roll out boxes, but the best I found was this post by Opa (pics further down in post).

I built 2 double nests for my 12 ladies. They work fantastic! Well, at least they look like they work fantastic. My hens are only 11 weeks old. But, if I can train them to lay in there, things will be great!

I have struggled a lot with the nest boxes, as the wife wants the 5.5 year old to be able to get the eggs. With the coop already 3' off the ground... I have to really plan what I do. I am also trying to not create a path for drafts to go through either.

Here are 2 models that I had come up with... both show the nest box on the side.

Get a little step stool for now, and in 6 months you'll be glad you didn't design it 'down' too much for him...

Good luck, can't wait for the rest of the build photos.

Marty

p.s. Nice Drawings!

Almost done!!!

Things to do still....

*Finish cutting siding flush with roof
*overhangs
*door
*paint
*shingles
*nestboxes
*roosts
*windows/vent
*pop-door
*gutters (yes gutters! otherwise the roof over the run is pointless)

I still cant decide what to do with nest boxes... I had mocked up some to hang out the side... but I really dont like them. I am thinking of making one of the doors a 'split' door, with maybe a 10" or so bottom part... allowing that to be opened to access the back of nest boxes sitting on the floor.

For the roosts, I am seriously considering a sawhorse or 2!! That would make it easy to pull them out for cleaning, etc, also might make it easy to put a poop tray in :-)

Very nice! Did you like working with those brackets? I got the same kind in a kit and got fed up with them (if anyone is interested in the kit PM me and I'll make you a deal--it's the normal roof, not gambrel roof, for a 7 by 8 shed). So I'm going back to balloon framing. arrrrghhh!

But it looks like those worked well for you!

Sorry for the delay!!

Weather and other projects got in the way (well that and our hatching!! 100% woot woot)

Anyway, I managed to get the siding trimmed down, and started the overhangs today....

Here are the latest pics:
