In the Brooder
A little less than two weeks ago I bought my first flock of 5! We ended up with two Brahmas, two Road Island Reds, and one Americauna (so excited about blue eggs!)
I am still trying to figure out how to repurpose an old dough-boy pool frame into a chicken run. Any ideas helpful!
Right now the temps outside are about 100. So I have my girls outside with a tiny mister (that they can get away from if they want) and at night I bring them into the garage with their lamp on (though I doubt that it gets below 80 degrees in the garage)
I have them on a chick starter crumble and they seem to love it. (My fat little Brahmas like to lay down next to the food and eat. They are so lazy. But they play a lot when they feel like it.
When I was a very young child we kept chickens. Then later in my teenage years I was reintroduced to my late girls Phyllis and Obi. After they died I was a young adult, now that I finally have my roots down somewhere with a huge backyard, I am so excited to get started again.
I am mostly raising chickens as pets/entertainment/biology for the kids, but the eggs are a huge bonus! Just played 3 bucks for a carton and with five girls laying 5 eggs a week or more, I will never have to buy eggs again. Plus they will be healthier and more beautiful than anything I could possibly buy at the store!
I am also starting my own garden and excited about the droppings being in my rich, home made compost for growing nice veggies!
Nice to meet you all!
