Starting a hatch September 21....hatch along?

Lots of people hatch refridgerated eggs, the only thing you have to watch for is the air sac development because of the low humidity in the fridge. Good Luck!

Does that mean the air sac won't develop?

Does anyone have tips on candling brown or olive eggs? I can't see through them. I'm using a LED flashlight with a toilet paper tube tightly taped to it.

I keep my incubator going 24/7! I usually get a hatch once a week. Seramas and what I'm calling Frizzle Fleurs (a sizzle and mille fleur d'uccle mix). They are so fun!Hope your hatch goes well!

No, the sair sacs might be larger than usual to start out with because of the low humidity in the fridge, so you may have to adjust the humidity accordingly, but it should be fine. I'll attatch a picutre for air sac development. If the cells are too large, raise the humidity, if the cells are to small, lower the humidity. Though personally, I believe the sairs sac should be a bit larger than the picture by day 18. You can find others by googling "chicken egg air cell development". You can also caluclate masses if you want to be more accurate, but I don't own a proper scale so I use pictures and what I remember from past hatches. I usually keep 35% during the first 18 days and 55% the last 3 because thats what works for my area. Everyone should be checking air sacs cause humidity is often a cause for deaths right before hatch.

Day 7 here and just candled. My young cockerel appears to have done his duty admirably. All 6 in the bator appear viable and progressing well.

I've never hatched from my own cream legbars so fingers firmly crossed!

Hope everyone else is doing OK.

This is fun!! I have 11 days to go until hatch day.
I do have a question though. From Oct 5th- 8th We are going to be away. Is it alright that the eggs don't get turned during these days? If i make sure the water in the incubator is high enough (I'm using a Brinsea Mini Eco) when we leave (which will be Oct 4th at like 10 pm) do you think it will hold them until we get home?

Thoughts?

Hopefully someone who has done this will be able to help. This is my first hatch, so I don't know.

How often can we safely candle? I'm thinking (from memory) that my air cells might already be larger than what we're supposed to be on day 7.

You can candle as much as you want, just don't keep the incubator open for too terribly long. I love candling and usually look at a few of them every night. I candle all of them and take out the bad ones on days 7, 10, and 18. Opening the incubator is just like a mother hen would get off her nest to go eat, drink, and poop. My first hatch, I candled every egg every night and had a 95% hatch rate.

What days will october 5th through 8th be for you? The first days are the most important, if they will be after 10 days, they will be fine. We have a seasonal, so we are camping almost every weekend and I leave my eggs unturned for thsoe 2 days however many times with no negative effects.

And also on the air sac thing, the main thing to watch for is that the air sacs aren't too small. Mine are too big at this point as well, because they were shipped so they were over a week old when I set them. Often chicks drown in the shells when humidity is too high and a lot of people make that mistake cause there is a lot of wrong information. So too big may not be a problem unless they are extrememly huge, if you are worried, you could always take a picture and post it.

grr...

I'm down to 4 embryos for the $55 I payed... I hate buying shipped eggs, but I don't think there is any other way to get these birds. I've contacted tons of breeders, and it seems nearly everyone has given up on the silver laced cochin bantams, but they are soo beautiful if they are bred right.
