Stella's Social Club

I thought I's throw a little food in the mix today, not intended to take the focus off our friends who are hurting tonight.

I have never seen Cape Gooseberries of Pinchuberries in the grocery store until today. Not one to pass on something news I bought the only package they had. I made a Cape Gooseberries and Blueberry Flaugnarde, which is like Clafouti except it is not made with cherries so it can't be a Clafouti.

OMG, it is so good. It is like a baked custard with fruit. It sort of makes it's own crust with the 1/2 cup flour in the custard. Even Michael liked it!

Do they have Cape Gooseberries where y'all live?
These are gorgeous pictures!! It looks like it would taste as good as it looks!

I planted regular gooseberries last year and tried some green ones on the bush...they weren't ripe and didn't taste good. Then I tried a bit later on, but I think they still weren't ripe...they weren't sweet at all. I will just leave them on the bush even longer this year and see. I have only two bushes I think. I planted them in a tangle with my other blueberry and currant bushes, which makes counting bushes difficult. The chickens run under all the bushes and I have chicken wire mixed in to protect the bushes. It is like a tiny jungle in the summer. It is difficult to pick berries but at least I don't have to weed around them.

Sorry to you southern folks about your weather problems, snow and ice are always an issue up here and can create all kinds of havoc no matter how prepared you are.

Today I am crossing the ice of Lake Huron to go to Mackinac Island, and summer vacation getaway where about 300 hardy souls winter. There are no vehicles on the island except emergency ones (fire, ambulance and police). All transportation is by horses and bikes. And, in the winter, snowmobiles. I go over occasionally for work, and this will be my first trip across the ice - around 2 1/2 miles to the closest part of the Island. Despite the very thick ice this year, I am still somewhat anxious about all that cold water underneath. My good friend who travels back and forth gave me the best advice I have heard yet - Stay On the Path!

Wow that sounds like a neat outing! Stay warm!

Stay safe muttsfan! Yikes, I would be scared to death. I have never really driven in snow except once in Salt Lake City on a business trip. I was white knuckled all the way back to the airport!

Cyn, that is a beautiful scene! The aftermath can't me much worse than we had after the torrential rains last week. Everything is drying up pretty fast. I no longer skate on mud from pasture to pasture.

It is sprinkling this morning and more due on the weekend. We need it. Gosh, the pastures are already greening up nicely. Now, if I could just figure out a way to get a blade of grass to survive in the chicken runs we'd be good.

I love snow pics!
