Yay for much needed rain today!

Got a new layer today- One of my mottled orps has finally began laying! They are about 8-9 months old. Good size for a pullet egg!

wow thats a big first egg.... I havent been around Orphingons are they large chickens?

deb

Huge. 8 lb hens and 10 lbs roosters on average. One of those true dual purpose birds but very late to maturity. Not really full size until 15-18 months.

Huge amount of rain. lots of local flooding. I am anxious to see what things lok like in the daylight tomorrow. I hope the emus decide to use the shelters tonight. We never saw Jack or Diana today. they were probably holed up down the property in their shade shelter. It is bigger than the one by the house and they can lay down. I'll go looking for them tomorrow.

Thats HUGE... do they lay alot of eggs?

This is my first time with the mottled orps. So time will tell. They are fairly new to the US and rather pricey. My Jubilees orps started laying in early summer, I only had 4 hens lost one pretty quick so 3 for most of the summer. I'd say I got 4 eggs per week from each hen. I feel my Mottleds are larger than my Jubilees, although I think they are supposed to be the same size. I should get some weights to check that.
