My heart is hurting for a friend today. Found out late last night that her chicken coop caught on fire and spread to several coops. Spent the day with her helping to assess the damage and the missing birds. It looks like arson and she suspects one of several disgruntled neighbors but no proof. The fire marshall called it as being unknown cause but it was a suspicously fast fire, she caught it as soon as it started, and there is an accelerant burn line in the dirt in front of the coop. And it adds insult to injury that the coop they started the fire in was her Ayam Cemani pen- she lost them ALL. She had 8 point of lay hens that had just started laying and one rooster. She is devastated. Her daughter's special birds were killed, too. I brought some of her birds to my place to an empty pen and am going to loan her some empty coops and cages for the rest of her homeless birds. 6 coops are a total loss.

That is so very sad!

Time for security cameras.

Oh how horrible. Who would do such a thing. they could have at least opened the doors and let the birds out before lighting it. I guess the point was to get rid of the birds. I wouldn't put something like this past the scumbags across the road from us though.

Last week was SOOO COLD  it actually hit 20 degrees in my back yard!  There was a skiff of ice on top of our pool! ... but yesterday and today and the rest of the week it will be PARADISE.

I did a five mile jog after work today and just LOVED being out in my Phoenix mountains.

I'm hoping an investment comes through for me in March and if it does, THAT'S when I'll put the pressure on my wife and my next door neighbor to give me the OK for chickens again.  I've looked at coops and I've decided that I can build my own! It may take me some time, but I'll know everything that I want and so I'll be able to incorporate it into my small coop.  I've already got a yes on getting me an Aloha hen... if I have that and perhaps an Icelandic, an Ameraucana and a Marans... and perhaps an exotic polish, I'll be complete.

Hurray on getting the chickens

OMG how horrible! To have a fire happen accidentally is horrible enough, but to have it intentionally set?

And such expensive birds too. I'm so very sorry for your friend.

Since it started where her ayam cemani were I think it was someone who clearly knew the worth of them. A neighbor or competitor? Just horrible!

It is possible livestock that expensive.

I might insure chickens that are worth that much.
