I'm also ready for spring. The last few days have been so cold and major wind - wind chill is below zero. We had the warmest February ever and the early bulbs are up and almost ready to bloom. Then the deep freeze hit and the poor buds are freezing now.

Kelly, you've been on my mind. The last week I've had 2 major attacks on my chickens. So far I've lost 4 of my young layers. We caught an enormous raccoon after the first attack. This afternoon I came home from a happy family birthday party to find disaster had struck again in the old ones barn. My little 10 year old white Silkie rooster, Pointy (my avatar) was mangled in the middle of the barn floor and Barney Green, my 14 year old Barnevelder hen was missing. I finally found her, also mangled and dragged to the farthest corner of the big pen. I've set the traps again but it's so upsetting and discouraging. And now I'll never know how long old Barney could have lived on her own. She was in amazingly good shape for 14 and, even half eaten, she was quite heavy.
I'm so sorry to hear that you are having predator issues now.

First three pics are the two does that just kidded carrying their three kids. @drumstick diva

The doe that kidded first this year was moved to space in the buck barn. Here she is with the sire of her kids.

THe first group of triplets from yesterday. The black one is the doeling.

The two surviving doelings from yesterday's second kidding.

Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear of your attacks! I wouldn't wish what I've gone through on anyone. Are these daytime attacks? When you think you are secure, something finds it's way in and proves that you are not secure like you thought. It is truly heartbreaking!

I was told if you do not want to catch skunks, then elevate the trap 12 inches off the ground. Everything else will climb in, but skunks cannot. I have not tried it though.

My pluot trees had just begun to blossom, and now snow. At least the plums, peaches, apricots and nectarines aren't in bloom yet. It seems to happen every year, the fruit trees blossom, then snow. My bees need some pollen to raise their brood!

Thanks for the photos Mike, I don't see how the poor mamas could stand up with their oversize loads. They have to feel so much better now. The goatlets are just stinkin' cute,

Do you have a jungle gym or some playground for the babies? I've seen videos of them playing on trampolines, etc.

No, nice jungle gym for them, they will start jumping on pretty much anything soon, cinder blocks, milk stand, anything they can.

Robhuncor, so very sorry to hear of your losses. Yet you had a silkie live to be 10, and a hen, 14. That speaks volumes for the care you have given your flock. I never knew chickens could live that long.
