Stella's Social Club

Thanks. I'm signing up for beginning and intermediate bee classes. It's a lot harder than it seems. I couldn't get into a class last year.

I spoke with a local beekeeper and he thinks I lost my bees to mites. Mites are a huge issue in bees. You need to treat for mites in august. He also told me how to test for mites without killing the bees and how to treat the hive. He said he will give me some pointers too. I ordered 3 lbs of bees and a marked queen from him. (I have a hard time spotting the queen unless she's marked) It's so nice to have an experienced beekeeper that is willing to help me out.

Good luck to you as well. Have you ordered your bees?

Chickens are easy. Bees are not easy, but they are fascinating. They can range 3 miles and still find their way home.

Thank you for the great info, Same thing couldn't get into the class last year.

Your lucky to have a experienced beekeeper to help you.

No bees ordered yet.

Ok Kelly, I made the pierogis. They were good but a lot of work. I am going to use the extra dough to make dessert pierogis and probably won't make them again. Lots of calories and fat and a lot of work and mess to clean up.

I locked down the eggs in my incubator tonight! The Isbar was not on the nest today so I didn't have to share with her.

The Christmas lights help keep the tomatoes from freezing... as long as it doesn't go below 28. Then all bets are off.

I certainly hope we get an El Niño we really need the rain.... but I'd feel badly for the folks in mid Indiana and Ohio...

During summer (from June-August) I compost... makes great gardens from September through May.

I usually plant twice a year. Last week in Aug/First week in September and the 3rd week in January.

That looks delicious! And yes, I bet a lot of work.

I'd love to get bees and even my husband is for it, though I told him it would have to be "his" project. I have enough to do with sole care of the chickens, ducks, turkeys, horses and cats. This year we fenced in a big area for the horses and left a horse free "mote" around the outside. I thought this would be a good place to plant bee food.

I see from the map we are right in the normal band, but I suppose that could shift a bit either way. I have heard it's supposed to be another dry year for Iowa, but I really am praying we get a break.
