Hope everyone is doing great today! Those quail sound delicious. I used to raise them and just got tired of them so I gave them away.

And I stole this from another thread but

this was part of an ethics discussion in a psychology class I had, is it more ethical to have someone on meds and functioning in a hospital or let them out in public and not at all functional, but free. But if they are out will they end up putting themselves or others at risk for losing their lives? I asked if there was any thought to a hybred system where if someone has such a disorder that a group home setting might work with monitoring of drugs but they still had some sort of life outside an institution. No one had an answear for that.

That is precisely the situation my sister is in now. And yes, it works well. She's happier and better off there than she had been her previous 55 years at home, mental institutions one after the other etc etc.

Okay, it looks like we're on for the braised quail.

I hope to heck I like them (I've never eaten quail before). It takes me several hours to process four chickens and my back is killing me by the time I'm done. It literally took fifteen minutes to do four quail (of course I gave up the lovely skin. I could have even dry plucked them since they were older, but this was an experiment). If I find out I like them, then I'll put a little more work into it.

1. Start out with a coturnix quail egg.
2. Sixteen days later you have a quail chick.
3. Seven weeks later, you either have breeding birds or ready to process birds.
4. Fifteen minutes later, they are chilling in the fridge.

Amazing conversion.

Don't look if you don't like to see where your food comes from. Scroll quickly.

Hilarious!

Deb - You need four of them for 2 of you to eat? That is what I can't get by with quail. They are so small, it hardly seems worth the effort to butcher them. Let me know how they come out.

My kitchen scale is acting up, but they probably weigh about 3-4 oz. each. I think 3 will feed the two of us, but I did a spare (lunch tomorrow at the office?) And I'm not kidding, it took 15 minutes to do all four. The only reason I didn't butcher all the extra boys is I was afraid I might not like the meat. In which case I'll sell them still alive. If I like them, I'm going to do all the extras in one session and freeze them. The four represent two coturnix and two bobwhite, so I can see if there is a difference (besides the extra work of raising bobwhite).

Okay, I just took all the baby waterfowl for a bath and a graze on the lawn. I need to sort through the 100+ photos I took, but in the meantime, here is some ducky cuteness for you.

One of the call ducks I just hatched out
