Oh Mary, I'm so sorry.

I know how you feel, I've lost a few chicks to water dishes. The absolute worst are silkies. They can drown in a small water dish when they are a couple of months old already.

Okay Jason, next time you come down with something, come on over. I'll supply hand sanitizer and building materials.
lol will do

Oh I'm so sorry. It is shock how fast they can drown in how little water. You reminded me to get rid of my shallow watetets while the broodies have tineys. So at least your sadness can save a life :(. I had to cull a turkey this morning. I cried all day.
Well, I'm heartsick. I let Elska and the three Araucana chicks she hatched for me out of their pen when I came home for lunch. When I got home I went out to check and she only had one chick with her. I found the other two in the water pan I had in the coop for the flock...:hit ..didn't even think they could reach it but there was bedding mounded up in places and somehow they got into the water and couldn't get out. It was a beautiful day, why weren't they outside enjoying it?!:hit Lesson learned.....the hard way.

Sheriff Mary, if your pen fencing doesn't go down to the ground - put a short liner inside that does. Your chicks are trying to tell you something.

I know Diva! We have an erosion problem. We have put rocks and gravel and it just washes away and they pull the gravel out. The gap is zero in some places and 8 inches in another. DH bought poultry netting to try to overlay the bottom of the fence and bury it into the ground a bit. Neither of us are good diggers because of back and breathing problems. We are going to try to get it worked out tomorrow.

we had the same thing when we had dogs -because the ground was so rocky and uneven the 6ft. wooden security fence had gaps too. I had never had a problem with my dogs digging We had just moved in - the dog runs hadn't arrived yet.

I was looking out the bedroom window on the second floor and saw two dogs running thru the backyard. It took me a while to realize they were MY dogs. Then I broke my neck going down and thru the house to the back door to scream at them to come back - they did. But my heart was in my mouth, they had never been loose before and I figured they would get lost, killed or dognapped (both were champions)That was. 43 years ago and I still get the sick, panicky feeling when I think about that. Still don't know how they got under the fence - the gate was locked. but clearly they did.

So sorry to hear about the chick losses.

I picked up a little Delaware to take some poop of it's butt and the broody mama attacked me right in my face!

I couldn't go after her cuz she was just doing her job

Mary another thing you can do as well is bend it in half. use part of it up the fence and part on the ground. I have been doing this until I can get all my loose areas staked down with tent stakes. It has been working great so not as much motivation to go get more stakes. They work great as well as predators can not push the fence up if you put 2 between each fence post
