Oh Kathy that is heartbreaking... take the time you need for mourning then let all your other little feathered sweethearts remind you of the joy there is in living.

Large dog crates work great for this (depending on how big your coop is). I like my plastic airline crate best for a broody hen and when she first has her chicks. The wire crates work too, but you need to put a cardboard border (like a crib bumper) that is at least 6-8 inches tall around the bottom to keep the chicks in. I like the wire crates as "creep feeders"......I have one that I put treats for the chicks in..door closed...the youngest ones can fit through the spaces to eat but the older chicks and chickens can't get in.Oooooh, me likes Falki!
I like the pullet eggs for hard boiled eggs too. They are just the right size.
Kathy - I'm not sure, but I've had eggs go missing too. I suspect they somehow get broken and the broody gets rid of the evidence. I'm in a broody quandry right now. I let my Icelandic girl out with her almost one week old chicks today. BUT I have 2 more broodies that are both scheduled to hatch Thursday. I still haven't decided what to do with them. I usually give them close to a week in the broody area so the rest of the flock adjusts to them and they get steadier on their feet. But with 2 of them................. I may have to figure out a way to temporarily section the broody area in 2 so the babies can get used to their surroundings before joining the whole flock.
