Oh Kathy that is heartbreaking... take the time you need for mourning then let all your other little feathered sweethearts remind you of the joy there is in living.

SO sorry for your loss, Kathy.

I checked on my broody Icelandic girl yesterday. There were gnats around her. So, I picked her up to check her over. There are now only 9 eggs there. She started with 12 or 13. Is she eating them? I found a couple shells, and I found one black chick crushed in the shell. What's up with this?

Kathy, I had a SLW that was on a bunch of shipped eggs. I think she cracked a couple one day getting in/out of the nest. I caught it a day or so later when I noticed a smell by her nest. I candled and then cleaned the remaining eggs that looked viable. I noticed she was missing an egg here and there the following week. I thought she must have known some of them were bad and was getting rid of them. I candled the rest again the next week and wasn't seeing much. None of the remaining eggs hatched. When I took the eggs away on the 23rd day, she just left the nest and went right out and began being part of the flock like the past three weeks never happened......I, on the other hand, was bummed over a "O" hatch........

I gave Anna three Icelandic eggs when she went broody.....I candled last night.....one was clear.....one had a blood ring....one was a swimmer, so she's got one........I hate singletons..

..they just drive the hens crazy when the time to wean them comes.......they don't have a group to hang with when momma says "so long" and I hate watching the hen constantly driving them away.........oh, well, such is life with chickens.........

I've got a few pullets that hatched this spring that are laying now........the pullet eggs make such great boiled eggs...just the right size to pop in your mouth.........of course, if you have a big mouth, XL hen eggs fit fine!

Falki........

Oooooh, me likes Falki!

I like the pullet eggs for hard boiled eggs too. They are just the right size.

Kathy - I'm not sure, but I've had eggs go missing too. I suspect they somehow get broken and the broody gets rid of the evidence. I'm in a broody quandry right now. I let my Icelandic girl out with her almost one week old chicks today. BUT I have 2 more broodies that are both scheduled to hatch Thursday. I still haven't decided what to do with them. I usually give them close to a week in the broody area so the rest of the flock adjusts to them and they get steadier on their feet. But with 2 of them................. I may have to figure out a way to temporarily section the broody area in 2 so the babies can get used to their surroundings before joining the whole flock.

Large dog crates work great for this (depending on how big your coop is). I like my plastic airline crate best for a broody hen and when she first has her chicks. The wire crates work too, but you need to put a cardboard border (like a crib bumper) that is at least 6-8 inches tall around the bottom to keep the chicks in. I like the wire crates as "creep feeders"......I have one that I put treats for the chicks in..door closed...the youngest ones can fit through the spaces to eat but the older chicks and chickens can't get in.

It's funny to watch the older chicks that used to be able to fit, try and squeeze through.....they know the good stuff is inside!
