My 2nd box of eggs arrived this morning so the incubator is now full.....

Haha congrats!!!

Thanks for the advice on the netting. We tried again after hubby got home, and concluded although it is larger than I thought it is not as large as it is supposed to be. I will look for red thread marking a corner but there is certainly no red ribbon or anything large that I saw. That would be too easy! I think we are going to turn it the short way to cover one end as far as it will go and order another section to do the other end if the seller doesn't send me another one. We are hiring a group of people to come out the day after Christmas to help with miscellaneous projects so we could wait until then to try to stretch it. The frustrating thing is I need the netting up NOW before I lose any more birds. Two BCM hens, both POL lost this week, and yesterday two double laced Barnevelder pullets flew into the BCM pen. I left them there for now if that's where they want to be, maybe it will curb the fence hopping!

congratulations!!!

my broody girl Astrid (swedish flower hen who went broody only about 3 weeks after she started laying) hatched three new chicks yesterday, which (including all chicks) brings my total up to 30.

the new chicks are from a birchen marans dad & an isbar/marans cross mom (black) -- two of them look almost identical, with lots of white on the face/chest, while the other is mostly dark... will be interesting to see how they change as they grow!

(I put the other 4 eggs in the incubator, since broody mom was already starting to leave the nest for food & water, but no sign of hatching activity -- i suspect they got too cold during our recent Big Freeze)
Cute, and now I'm really ready for spring!

Some people are so artistic and talented!

Great idea, I don't have the patience to make something like that.

Wow Kathy, that is beautiful. I love those that have artistic talent, because I don't even have a smidge of it.

Laura - congrats on the babies!

I'm down 4 roosters, my hens are going to love me! Now they only have 4 to contend with, not 8! I have a couple of pullets to cull, but I couldn't do it yet - right now I need ANYBODY that is laying eggs!
Chicken noodle soup at Kelly's!

Is it just me, or does my wagon look like a Currier and Ives print?

Lovely, and yes.

Good luck, happy hatching! If I remember correctly it's 50 something days, isn't it?

Does anyone use a cloche for bread baking? I am getting one from my honey for christmas

- he actually asked what I wanted this year, so no T-shirt or sweatshirt with fish on it (not that I don't like them but I already have a LOT of them).

No I have not. I have used clay bake ware before though.

I of course have to have a cloche now.
