Stella's Social Club

Oh, dear Lord, what a day! First the young cockerels are driving me nuts by driving the hens nuts. I have two D'Anver broodies that insist on sitting and I don't want to give them eggs, but I may have to or they'll hurt themselves (had one hen literally kill herself by not giving up on brooding chicks). Great timing, Mina and Penny, since it's been in the single digits and I already have one rooster in my basement bathroom recovering from some frostbitten feet. Chicks and bantam chicks at that, NOW?
Then, my sweet, funny wacky 4 year old BR hen, Barbara, died. She only showed up with hard abdomen about two weeks ago that I noticed, post-molt. She was a very small hen but laid HUGE eggs, which may have been her downfall.
Then, a little while ago, an explosion in the vicinity rocked our house. I looked out the kitchen window across toward the mountains and saw a huge puff of white smoke, but then it dissipated and no more came. So, DH called 911 to report what we heard and where we think it may have been, generally. I'm bushed.

What a horrible day. Any word on the explosion?

No word about the explosion. No idea what happened. Guess we'll never know. Wonder how many calls 911 got about it.

Separated Caroline for 24 hours to help empty her crop. Guess we'll have to do that from time to time. At 7 years old, it's just become so pendulous, we have to manually get it to function for her.

Fern, my other 4 year old BR in that retirement coop (because Isaac hated her), looks really bad. She is skin and bones, no bloating, just blackish comb and lethargic, acting colder than she ought to. I'm betting cancer. We did a round of penicillin when she bloated up and she seemed better, the bloating went away, but then, she started going downhill and losing weight. She was my best layer for most of her four years. She's just about 6 months older than Barbara and I thought she was Barbara's mother, but since Barbara looks remarkably like Becca, I could be wrong about that.

Becca and Amanda, BRs out of McMurray parents, are about to turn 7 in March. Amanda is laying currently and has debilitating arthritis but she keeps on trucking and bossing everyone (except Caroline). Becca is in a nest now. She has lots of "false starts", gets a little bloaty, then starts up laying again and the fluid goes away. That's what I was hoping would happen with Barbara, but sadly, it didn't.

It feels like winter here.

Cyn, What is the brand name of that mayonnaise you like? Is it Blue-something?

Kathy, it's Duke's Mayonnaise. My sister loves Blue Plate, but we love Duke's. Has no added sugar, very good. And I didn't used to like mayo all that much, but I love Duke's.

Cynthia, so sorry to hear about the visit from some rogue pitbulls. I had two horrid visits last year. Still painful to recollect, to be honest.

My gut says that once they visit, they'll be back. Keep a sharp eye.

We sure will. Birds are locked up today because it's in the teens and snowing. I feel bad for those smooth coated dogs if they're out in this mess.

Hey, guys, check out the first page of Blue Roo Creations about halfway down! Got a sweet thank you card from our youngest customer. Thought you'd love it. It's adorable and so is she! Pictures of her and the note are there. And she even sent me a gift!
