Oh, dear Lord, what a day! First the young cockerels are driving me nuts by driving the hens nuts. I have two D'Anver broodies that insist on sitting and I don't want to give them eggs, but I may have to or they'll hurt themselves (had one hen literally kill herself by not giving up on brooding chicks). Great timing, Mina and Penny, since it's been in the single digits and I already have one rooster in my basement bathroom recovering from some frostbitten feet. Chicks and bantam chicks at that, NOW?
Then, my sweet, funny wacky 4 year old BR hen, Barbara, died. She only showed up with hard abdomen about two weeks ago that I noticed, post-molt. She was a very small hen but laid HUGE eggs, which may have been her downfall.
Then, a little while ago, an explosion in the vicinity rocked our house. I looked out the kitchen window across toward the mountains and saw a huge puff of white smoke, but then it dissipated and no more came. So, DH called 911 to report what we heard and where we think it may have been, generally. I'm bushed.![]()
What a horrible day. Any word on the explosion?
