Snowed here last night too

This is my early garden crew, after being chased out of the flower garden twice they moved on to till the raised bed for me - my prediction of snow still on the ground in May unfortunately looks like it will happen.

Kathy, what are you going to do with Toni Turkey? She looks bereft.

Can you sex the chicks, Cyn? Are you gonna keep them?

Well, there's the rub. If you go by usual BR sexing rules, taking away the black wash down the leg fronts that is usually more of a hatchery BR pullet trait than one with heritage stock, seems to me, the head spots say pullet on all three of the barreds. So does the barring coming in (one has super fine barring, too, yea!) None have really dark leg fronts, except of course for the two solid blacks. But, since Rex is technically not 100% BR, could be the sexing is skewed and I might have three cockerels, who knows? So far, the barring and head spots say pullet. But they are so tiny, they don't have fully developed wing barring. Within two weeks, I'll be more sure.

The two solid black are a roduct of Rex's single factor barring. I'm told that those two have to be pullets by folks who seem to be in the know on genetics using a male like Rex over straight BR hens. Right now, I'm thinking I'll sell the two black pullets and one of the chicks whose barring is not as crisp and keep two of the barreds (as long as they are not both male, that is). This is me doing as close to what Bob suggested as I can and if I this sharply barred chick looks as great later it already does at two weeks, I can breed from Rex until I have a double factor barred male, though, until Isaac passes on, I won't have a coop to truly separate out a breeding group.

Rex is very dominant and territorial and Scout, the Delawegger, is so mild mannered and the hens, especially the big Stukel BRs, are so tough, Scout just gets no love, LOL. That is good for me since I'm not wanting chicks out of Scout, sweet though he may be. All these are obviously Rex's chicks.

It is not suppose to snow in California.

Furthermore, it is not suppose to snow this time of year!
lol yeah not as common this time of year but honestly it always ttys to snow around may. a few years ago at my house down the hill a little at 2400 feet it snowed may 31st.

Here we get it quite a bit in the winter but it melts fairly quick if you go up the road to the summits they gare one of the snowiest places in the lower 48 states( except drought years lol)

it's been a nutty week at work and i'm off sailing today (despite snow in the sierras, how crazy is that?), and i'm way behind on BYC, but wanted to quickly say congratulations on the photo win, Mary!

Kathy, that's awesome. One counterpart to our pair has been MIA for quite some time. I wonder if she has babies somewhere.
