Love the article about eggs. Of course the naysayers are coming out of the woodwork as they always do. That piece of toast in the post above would be a lot healthier with an egg on top!

I love smart chicks!

That is actually my brooder plate covered with Press-and-seal wrap - I have to say it has been worth the cost, the chicks are quiet and happy, come out to eat, drink and lounge about, and just seem more content than chicks under a heat lamp. I think being able to go under it and hide like they would in a hen's feathers gives them peace of mind.

Thumbs up on the egg article!

I'm alive! I know the relief when you find homes for birds, trust me. Still looking for a few good homes for some, but most are taken care of already, thanks to Ladyhawk.

Here are my two newest coffee mugs, one a Walmart special and one gorgeous custom made by her friend on the west coast just for us with our Blue Roo Creations logo on it. It's so beautiful, not sure I can do more than display it on my mantel.

Yes you are alive Speckledhen...so am I. This is a good sign. Now for the story.....I think folks should know exactly what sort of place you are running up there on your mountain.

So she says "I have birds for you" and "You will love Deacon when you meet him...he is a goober" which should have raised flags for me but I trusted her. LOL

So, I arrive and am immediately greeted by the welcome committee i.e. the Goober aka Deacon. The rooster that no fence will hold.

He is a friendly goofy sort but he can be an opportunist pest....girls from every flock rush to humans to save them from this wandering gigolo. So, I fed him treats, scolded him, beat him with a stick for harassing the sweet rooster Scout (well I tossed a twig at him) and he really grew on me which I will never tell him. BUT right before I loaded up babies for the trip I wanted to take a few minutes and give loves, treats and pats to several of my favorites and older birds. Speckledhen has a coop that has her old women in it which is called the "Old Ladies Home and Hospice"...they are allowed to retire there and live a rooster less existence and enjoying special attention and care in their old age....most of the women in there are 6 and 7+ years old.

So, I go into Isaac's yard to videotape him for my daughter and feed him some raisins and Isaac and I had been chatting and he was getting pats and wattle rubs when I started the video...I am squatted down with camera pointed at Isaac at the water bucket when the rush of wings is heard and Deacon is suddenly perched on my neck, foot on either side and perched happily (there is brief video of this as I turned the camera over my head and tried to capture him on film)....then I notice Isaac looking at Deacon.....

Suddenly Isaac breaks into a run directly at me allowing me time only to brace for impact and think "Dang this is gonna hurt" and Isaac hits me and Deacon sending Deacon flying over my head and all Speckledhen could do was say "God what are you doing?" and start laughing. hahahahaha Myself, all I could do was turn to look at Isaac standing there beside me and say "Thank you for protecting big boy".

So apparently Isaac felt this assault on his friend the treat lady from Kentucky was unacceptable behavior on Deacon's part and he felt the need to rush to my aide. All I can say is...it was a good rush, an effective hit and no one was hurt. However the video was abruptly ended by the slam. hahahaha

This is my Protector, Isaac

I always love visiting Speckledhen's house for several reasons....first because she is the most wonderful person on the planet and I love her to death, two she has the most enjoyable flock I know of aside from my own and three...she has the greatest roosters there are.

Speaking of which...Scout needs a forever home and I was going to bring him home but do not have a pen for him at present and refuse to keep him cooped up while one is built. This boy is an incredible love and he is gorgeous. So should anyone want a handsome, sweet good rooster that is human friendly, talk to her about giving him a home. He deserves hens of his own without harassment from his brothers. Here is a video I shot of him while sitting on the ground....I was yet a stranger to Scout and he had no issue with me sitting on the ground at his level and touching him.

It was a good visit and thank you so much for everything, my dear friend. We made a crocheted bag which we will stuff with goodies for a charity event we are contributing to, played with chickens all weekend and ate great food made by my sweet hubby, who is an excellent cook. And you really got the full Deacon experience, didn't you?

ETA: I will have a hitch in my stomach when Scout leaves. I adore him. He makes his way down the roost every evening if I go in after they've settled so I can pet him and rub his face and beard, risking the wrath of Rex, who hates his guts. He's just a love, that boy, but he has no real life with Rex being as relentless as he is.
