X2Congrats!
Kelly - a bear chased you! EEEK!
bears run at about 40mph. The fastest human, Usian Bolt ran about 27mph for a sprint. I do not run any where near that fast.My dog really earned her keep last night. It was nearly 10PM and she started barking. We told her to shush, then my DH started hearing noises. We went out with a flashlight to see a bear in our trash, which is right behind the house. We saw where the bear wandered off. Then I sent my dog out and she started tracking it. I found out how fast bears can run and had to get my butt back in the house quick with glowing eyes running at me.
Shadow chased that bear off, but from a completely different area of our property than where it wandered off. There wasn't time for the same bear to get to that area and my dog was confused at one point tracking it, so we think we may have had 2 different bears on the property. Hopefully a good dog chasing will change it's mind about coming back.
Now I have to walk the property line today (we're on 5 acres) and see if all of our fencing is still intact.![]()
Good girl Shadow! And I guess her owners had better pay more attention when she barks.![]()
I've always been told that bears can run really fast....................holy smokes they run fast.
Nice!We received some good news today, one of the goat kids we sold this spring won Grand Champion Nigerian Dwarf goat at their county fair!![]()
No not really, just running in my direction.Congrats!

10PM and glowing eyes heading for you (because I was shining the flashlight), instinct tells you to get outta there. It was still a good 100 feet or so away. I was very close to the house, so it was a quick dash to the house. Had I been out in the open and away from the house, I would have had to think of my options. I was just out there to watch after my dog. She runs fast too, and was not that far behind the bear.bears run at about 40mph. The fastest human, Usian Bolt ran about 27mph for a sprint. It is best to not run from a bear, unless you are very close to the house.
It is good to have the dog protecting you too.Nice!

I don't know. I certainly wouldn't shoot it on my own, it would just make it angry. I once knew a man that hunted bears and he said their heartbeat is so slow to allow for hibernation and even with a clean shot, it takes a while for them to realize they are dead. They can do a lot of damage in that time. Thanks everyone.
Kelly, I think my heart would still be racing. Are you allowed to shoot a bear in California?
