Stella's Social Club

Backsplash done. I didn't want to overdo the tin look so I added chalkboard behind the little desk area in the kitchen. I need to get more moulding tomorrow to cover up some bad cuts!

The first day Emily was here we went through all my spices (lots) and tossed the outdated ones. Many of them didn't have dates so we tested them and then decided. I am down to a much more reasonable number since combining duplicates too.

I haven't decided what we will be doing tomorrow, maybe organizing and cleaning the service porch. It is easily the messiest space we have. Ugly (back me up here Kelly) white vinyl flooring and godawful mauve countertops. I am going to be changing out the laminate countertops for a better color and having new flooring put in. I think the mauve countertops are from the late 60's, as in 1960's. Before we get flooring I ned to add some stepping stones out the back door to cut down on the mud tracked in.

These are all things we planned to do when we bought the place but just took a oouple of years getting around to it.

I probably need to do that, too. How do you "test" spices?

ROFL. Did Kelly pay you a visit, too?

I've had sick kids all. night. long. So between cleaning up after them and running load after load of laundry I took the time to edit a bunch of photos that have been sitting around for at least a month waiting. Here are some of my favorites:

nice looking birds

Emily and I had a whirlwind day in the kitchen yesterday organizing before running errands and grocery shopping. Michael's daughter visited for a few hours yesterday along with a friend of hers so it was busier than normal here. I picked up my vegetable box but didn't have time to trim, wash, and store the veggies. I'll have to do that today.

I need to get creative with those fennel bulbs from last week and the celeriac I got this week!

I think I may have someone in Ohio interested in a few emu eggs! I told him I would just charge for the shipping since I have no idea if they are fertile. Don't worry Jason, she's laying every three to four days like clockwork. I got egg number six today!

im afraid ill need a bigger coop haha
Don't look Mary, 2 week old puppy pictures now with names.

The experts suggest smelling & tasting them. We mostly used the smell test by shaking the container or crushing a little of the spice and smelling it. If it didn't smell like what it was supposed to be, we tossed it. You can also put some to the tip of your tongue and taste it but this was useless after a few tastes that all tasted alike. Anything that had clumped got tossed too. I still have about a hundred bottles lafter the big purge!

Use a flashlight to look for dates on the bottoms of the spics cans. They fade over time but you can see them with a flashlight.

Good news. Of the four things listed in this article of things only food snobs have in their kitchens, I only have 1.5! Since I only have bleu cheese and Roquefort in my fridge, I only counted that as 1/2 point!

I'll bet Diva has all four of them! Oh wait, ice cream wasn't mentioned. Nevermind.
