I think he looks adorable. Even after being woken up from his nap. Bet this will be much better for him when he is out and about in those burrs.

What is bearding? Scent of honey would be rather pleasant.


Bees beard when they get too hot. It basically means that they get out of the hive and hang in a group (pile) outside on either the side or front of the hive. It's a sign of a healthy population, provided they are not running out of room. When there is a strong nectar flow, they are trying to cure the honey (by reducing the moisture content) and extra bees increase heat and moisture. I'll get a picture of it tomorrow.

My small hive is likely bearding because they don't have a honey super on, so the hive is hotter. My large hive has a super, and so far, they haven't bearded that I've seen. They are standing at the entrance fanning and directing circulation into the hive.
