Mary, we have our main coop about 40 feet from our bedroom window. The east facing wall is solid, no morning sun gets in, we also have insulation in the walls, we rarely hear them crowing too early. In fact, if I do hear them at 4:00 am I go out to see if something is wrong.

My boys in the main coop stay pretty quiet until the sun is up amd they have an east window. The young Icelandics in the main barn and my little Bantam roo get going about 5 AM even when it is completely dark. It may depend more on the bird than their surroundings. It would probably help to darken the coops up and of course insulation will help deaden the noise.

I just picked up insulation and melamine boards to cover it. Don't know what to do yet with the open fronts. May have to do the same for those and then the coops will be pitch black day and night. Probably will suffocate in the summer heat.

I actually think I may have to get rid of my roosters altogether. Even outside the sound is deafening. They have been going non-stop for six hours. Isi has a very high pitched loud crow and he hasn't stopped to take a breath. Trying to work out there was maddening. I am just heartsick. What have I done?

You can see in the pictures that the runs go uphill. Behind that is a ridge and the sound just reverberates back down. I wonder if they'll shut up after a few days? Maybe I can send the neighbor to the coast for vacation. They are about the same distance from the house as most of them were at the old house but the sound is off the charts.

Mary, I think they will calm down..It seems like when I make change here, they are extra loud. You have had HUGE change. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you... Dillon is home today if you need any help.

I bet they will quiet down, Mary. I have 70+ roosters here, and it is quiet.
I am thinking quiet comes with comfort. They are out of their comfort zone right now. Give them some time and see.

70 roosters?

I too think they will quiet down. I spoke with Mary a bit ago, and she's going to insulate the roof. You know it's bad when she mentions getting rid of Isi!
