Step-to-Step Guide on How To Upload Pictures onto the BYC Forum:

How do I resize a picture? The pics I posted seem rather large and out of respect to the dial-up peeps I'd like them a bit smaller.

It's best to resize (and also crop if necessary) on your computer before uploading. Any graphics program will work; if you don't have one then there is usually one on a CD that came with the camera, or you could even use MS Paint ; Paintbrush (a free Mac app) or Gimp (free, for multiple platforms).

When you edit a photo, always use "save as" to save it to a new name, so that you preserve your original photo. Don't overwrite your original, keep your original image as an archive.

Some apps use the command "resize", others use "resample" or something else, but it's all simple. No need to upload anything here bigger than perhaps 800 pixels wide or 150k in file size.(I generally stay under 100k).

Thanks. Guess I was getting lazy since the old byc format automatically resized them.

I'll start using my IrfanView program.

You can resize by editing your post and adjusting the pics properties.

  1. Simply click the pencil icon to edit your post.
  2. Right click the image
  3. Choose Image Properties.
  4. Input a size for the width or height (just do one it'll figure out the other for you)
  5. Click Ok
  6. If you want to make it bigger or smaller then do steps 2-5 again.
  7. When you're happy with the size then, hit submit in your editor window and you've resized your image!

one question about that- does it actually create a new, smaller image, or is it strictly resizing in HTML? I suspect the later, in which case visitors to that page still have to d/l the full image, and therefore it is no benefit to folks on slow or dialup connections.

Does anyone know (or should I just go look at page source for a picture to find the answer?)

Gargoyle is correct that if you resize the image in the browser (by dragging the corner) that this only changes the display size of the image and not the filesize of the image, so it won't have any impact on the speed of downloading.

Fortunately when you upload pics to a post they are automatically resized to about 600 pixels wide which should still be okay for dialup users. The resized image automatically links to the larger version of the image.

When can new members post pictures? I don't have many posts, but was trying to post a picture of my unfinished coop and even after following all these directions, it didn't work. I read somewhere that new members can't post pictures for a while, but was wondering how long it takes. Thanks!

We've moved to a new system that should give most users instant access to post pictures. If you can't post pictures by now, there is something else probably going on. Here are a few questions that will help us find, duplicate, and hopefully resolve the problem:

• What is the URL of the page that you got the error or had problems?
• Did you receive any error messages? if yes, what were they (please copy and paste the entire message, screenshots are best)?
• What were the exact steps you took before having the problem? Please be as specific as possible so we can do exactly what you did.
• Which browser and version are you using (eg., Firefox 3.5.9, Internet Explorer 7, etc.)
• Have you logged out, deleted your internet cache, logged back in, and tried again?
• Have you tried a different browser?

I am using Firefox and had tried to post using photobucket.com and it didn't work. I did go back and tried posting again but by uploading directly from my computer and that did work...just a few minutes ago. :) I will try again using photobucket to see if I did it wrong or something. Thanks for your super fast response!! I LOVE BYC!!
