still losing chicks to cocci on day 3 of corid treatment. is this normal?

I've lost a few chicks to what i'm assuming is cocci (fluffed feathers, a few with bloody stool, very depressed). I started giving liquid corid, 9.5ml/gallon in their water. this is day 3 and I lost 2 3wk old chicks this morning and another 1 1/2 wk old looks depressed. is this normal? anything else I can do? from what I've read in various threads that's the right dosage... hate losing these chicks!

It doesn't work if they don't drink it. When my wife and I were fighting it, we had a couple we had to force some down with a dropper because they were already sick and not eating or drinking. We made a mush of chick starter and the Corid solution and made them drink every hour or two. I hope that helps.

ok thank you i'll go do that now. last night I made one drink the water, kept dipping his beak in it and he was drinking it, but he still died this morning. an hour ago I watched another one that seemed totally fine last night convulse and flop all over before finally dying. it's looks like all are drinking the water, but i'll watch them closer and make sure.

New chicks have no built up immunity to cocci, but all chickens will be exposed to it during their life. Besides feeding medicated chick starter feed also add some probiotics to their water. Plain yogurt mixed with some regular yeast, the crumbles & warm water to create a mash helps them develop their own immunity. Remember to keep liter clean. Put them a a card board box, clean out there pen with a disinfectant and put fresh wood chips down. The cocci especially likes dampness or humid conditions. This year has been tough for cocci.

well I just force fed several chicks and i'll keep it up every couple of hours. I was trying to stay away from the medicated feed as we're trying to raise them as organically as possible. we're feeding organic chick starter, it' not crumbled like the chick starter I've used in the past, but roughly ground. some of the chicks are slow broilers, others are egg layers. it's mostly the slow broilers that seem to have it though I have lost a few of the egg layers. if I have to get the medicated feed I can, but if at all possible i'd like to avoid it. we've cleaned & scrubbed the cage and it's in the sun right now, new wood chips will be put in. the chicks are in the yard now in a makeshift chicken tractor. I figured the sun might be good for them, hopefully i'm not making things worse. the obviously infected ones are in the garage. this sucks.

the medicated feed most likely has Amprol in it which is the same thing as in the Corid.

I may think about switching to Sulfadimethoxine. When I start treating for cocci, I hold the chick and give it the medication in the water by teaspoon, let it drip into the side of their mouth and I do it every few hours. They need to drink the med, and me giving them gives them a head start.

for now on i'll give it to them by hand at first. I used a dropper on those that seemed depressed 2 more times since my last post. I just went out there to check them again and they were ALL acting totally normal. including the one I posted about above. a couple hours ago it was laying there barely able to move. this time I was up eating and drinking! wow! I had marked those I treated so I could find them again but still asked my hubby to make sure that he didn't remove a dead one. that's a big/fast improvement! I wish i'd thought to ask a few days ago, could have saved 4 or 5 more chickens. oh well I know now. thank you all for the help.

and i'm assuming the corid will clear their system by the time they're ready for freezer camp... anybody know about that? it's not like i'm selling them, they're for personal use. I have a special needs daughter that we're trying to eliminate all chemicals/meds from her diet.

Not enough Amprolium in medicated feed to do anything for an overload/outbreak of Coccidiosis.

I would still try sulfadimethoxine, which is Albion.
