I honestly couldn't tell you. You'd "think" that if they have DNA "parental" tests available on the shelf at Walgreens they'd be able to do it with one of those?

I think any kind of OTC test kit for DNA would be a sample collection only type of thing. The sample would then still have to be mailed off somewhere for analysis.

$40.00 US for single DNA Profile.
$100.00 US for Parentage Verification (Both parents and offspring).

Sample Collection

Collect sample by pulling (not cutting) 20-30 mane or tail hairs with roots attached. It is important that you pull the hairs and confirm that the actual root of the hair is being collected. The root contains the genetic material of your horse that is needed for DNA testing. Therefore, cut hair do not provide an adequate sample of your horse. Place the collected hairs of each horse in a separate zip-lock bag labeling the bags accordingly with the horses name or identification number. Download and complete a submission form for each sample and send along with payment to Animal Genetics for testing.

Results are usually available within 2-4 business days of sample receipt.

Wont the DNA testing take weeks before the results are in? I hope not! You should be there just to confirm, 'yes', he is Max.

Just some advice on the Genetic Testing. I do genetic testing on most of my horses for various reasons. If you want to prove that this is truly Max, the only way to do that is Parentage Verification, which means you have to have both parents tested as well to prove that this particular horse came from these particular parents. Just testing Max , if the parents are not DNA typed will prove nothing really. If his parents are both registered (and I assume they are since he is) you may be able to call the Registry Association and ask if they are dna typed.
ROPO, I would be proactive here and go ahead and check this out, if you explain the situation and especially to APHA, if I remember right that is where he is registered, they may go ahead and give you the information , I would also speak with Member Services, a girl named Karen there is awesome. I hope this helps some. Also contact Shelterwood Labs, they do all my DNA testing and are inexpensive , you may explain the situation to them and see if paying an extra fee can get the test done quicker, it never hurts to ask.

still chewing nails and smoking this is driving me crazy I don't see how Repo is handling it. Repo you have the patience of a saint. I would be calling every hour until I got an answer. that's me I can't believe that they have dragged this out so long I worry that the uncle is going to move or hide max and try and use another horse I just hope the judge see's that for what it is worth. Is Max's mother still alive and if so can you get hair from her for a DNA test. I know you said that the owners of Max's dad was pulling hairs what about the mom I hope you can get Max home soon I wish the judge would let you go out there and see Max and say yes this is my horse or no this isn't Max if the uncle try's to pull a fast one. I would worry that he does not pull the hairs on Max but another horse wouldn't put anything past that evil Uncle....praying max is home soon.

I used to work for Walgreen's and indeed it is only a collections kit that still needs to be mailed away. If I recall correctly, it takes at least a month for it according to the package instructions. Likely longer since you aren't just waiting for them to test it, you're waiting for the mail process too which tends to take longer than one estimates.

I wouldn't insist on it though if I could help it because it just gives them more excuses to delay this thing. I'd get my duckies in a row for it though so that if it IS ordered I have everything ready to get it done ASAP.Like get mom and dads samples in the fridge and proper paperwork in order for it and such.

Otherwise, I'm severely disappointed in the judge at this point.

Maybe you could call the judge and offer to drive her over there, that might show her how serious this matter is. Good Luck. It sure is sad that if your horse was a car they would be more apt to act.
