Stormcrow's Hobby Farm

Lost a goat overnight. Much sadness. Will skip the details. Been disposing of most of the morning - got a memorable funeral pyre - the rest of the job from clearing underbrush from part of the property as I expand the pasture.

and just finished pressing grapes for wine. Have about 3/4 gallon of dark, vibrant pink - just enough room to start adding simple syrup to get to the desired alcohol content.

also, got the birds out of the raised gardens I just replanted, put up some temporary fencing, did some dishes, some research, and some postings here and eslewhere. Been a good day.

Want a nap now.

So what's new these days?

Have you ever had Metechi garlic? I'm planting some this fall. I've read it described as "great bulbs of fire" when eaten raw. I've grown Music for years, and I want a variety that has more bite when cooked.

Hubby leaves for a friend's wedding in Colorado in less than 3 weeks. I'll be making toum as soon as I see the tail lights go down the driveway. :drool

Hurricane track is improving for us. Virtually all my prep is done - a few tarps to takes down, and RV to strap down *anchors already in place* - but this looks like it may be (largely) a non-event for us, again. NOT complaining. Current track send it right through one of the least populous areas of the State, and then into the State's capital, where it (sadly) won't reserve its damage just for politicians.

There is a HUGE solar farm up there, very curious as to how it will fare if we do have a solid Cat 3 cut its way across that section of the state.

Either with steel cables that go over the frame in various locations and then attach to multiple earth augurs buried in the ground (which is what I have done currently) or with nylon tie-downs like you would use for towing (the big ones!, not the little 300# rated strength ones). By lunch, I will have both.

and I'm only trying to ensure it can take Cat 1/2 gusts, not that it would be here forever. A Cat 3 would peel the sides off this like a house of cards (which, in fairness, is basically how an RV is put together).

Were things expected to be a Cat 3 rolling over the property, I'd either abandon it all and expect to rebuild, or rent a truck and tow it elsewhere. Since this RV was used, needs new tires, and is constantly requiring expensive maintenance to maintain, and a truck that can tow it is several hundred dollar$ a day... I'd get a smaller vehicle and drive off with the contents I care about, abandon the rest.

Always have a plan. Maybe not the *best* plan, but a practical plan that can be quickly put in place.
