I usually get carved up in the process of getting them out of the cage, before I can do the football carry - and then again, moving them into the other cage. The 10 seconds or so I carry between cages isn't the issue.
How do you grab them to get them out of the cage?

I usually found that grabbing the scruff with one hand, then putting the other hand under their butt so it held most of their weight, would let me avoid scratches from about 75% of rabbits (even when they were not used to being handled.) Getting that hand under their butt even before I got their feet clear of the cage floor made a big difference. If the size or shape of the cage meant I could only grab with one hand, they were much more likely to scratch.

After a bit of searching, I found a website that shows the lifting method that worked for me:

I do remember that some entire litters were better or worse than others, so it is possible that some have a genetic predisposition to scratch more or less than others.

I would scruff and then spread my hand open under their tummy back by their butt, so my hand kinda looked like a diaper and lifted their butt before their scruff. They were usually so caught off guard by my 'cupping them' that they were still for the most part until I had them secure

Bellum (War) was given the opportunity to introduce himself to Pestilencia (Pestilence) yesterday, and introduce himself he did... Many times.

Let the countdown begin. Should have a new batch of kits at the end of the month, juist in time to process the last batch and start a new. Next pairing will be Snu Snu and Thanosia, then Bellum and Famēs.
And it looks like War failed to do the deal. Pestilence should have kitted by now, and she's not even pulling fur from her dewlap yet.

Going to need to re-pair them, and hope for better luck this time.
